Responsibilities
Strategic Workforce Capability Development
Develop and implement the annual Mining Training and Capability Development Strategy.
Align training initiatives with life-of-mine plans, operational objectives, and workforce requirements.
Partner with Mining Managers, Superintendents, and Technical Services teams to identify current and future capability needs.
Lead workforce planning initiatives that support succession, talent development, and operational readiness.
Develop sustainable learning pathways for mining personnel across Underground and Open Pit operations.
Underground Mining Training and Competency
Provide leadership and governance of competency development programs covering Underground Production Mining, Jumbo Operations, Long Hole Drilling, Development Mining, Charge-up Operations, Underground Load and Haul, Ground Support Activities, Underground Service Crew Functions and Underground Supervisory Development.
Establishing competency standards and assessment requirements.
Monitoring workforce capability and training compliance.
Supporting implementation of new mining methods and technologies.
Coordinating technical training interventions to improve operational performance.
Ensuring effective transfer of knowledge across underground crews.
Open Pit Mining Training and Competency
Lead training and competency programs for excavator, haul truck, dozer, grader, drill, shovel, and ancillary equipment operations, as well as open pit supervisory development.
Developing and maintaining training pathways for operators and supervisors.
Driving equipment operator competency and performance.
Implementing competency-based assessment programs.
Supporting operational excellence initiatives through targeted learning interventions.
Coordinating onboarding and progression programs for new operators.
Equipment Operator Development and Simulator Programs
Establish structured operator development programs.
Manage simulator-based learning and competency development initiatives.
Develop progressive learning pathways from trainee to competent operator.
Coordinate refresher and advanced operator development programs.
Ensure operator competency standards are maintained across all mining fleets.
Competency Management and Operational Readiness
Accountable for the integrity of mining competency systems across Underground and Open Pit operations.
Developing competency matrices and learning pathways.
Maintaining training needs analysis.
Ensuring competency assessments are completed and recorded.
Managing verification of competency processes.
Supporting workforce readiness for new projects, fleet introductions, and operational changes.
Safety Leadership and Risk Management
Ensure mining training programs support critical risk controls and operational safety requirements.
Promote a culture of safe work practices and continuous learning.
Support site fatal risk management initiatives.
Ensure personnel are competent in emergency response procedures and critical controls.
Monitor and address competency-related operational risks.
Contractor and Workforce Development
Oversee contractor training and competency assurance requirements.
Ensure contractor personnel meet site training and competency standards.
Support onboarding and mobilization processes.
Develop internal talent pipelines for critical mining positions.
Support career progression and leadership development initiatives within mining operations.
Qualification requirements
Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in mining engineering, Mineral Resource Management, Engineering & Training, or a related discipline.
Preferred
Postgraduate Qualification in Mining, Business Administration, Learning & Development, or Leadership.
Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122) or equivalent.
Assessor and Verifier qualification.
Experience and competencies needed.
8-10 years' experience within mining operations.
Experience across Underground and/or Open Pit mining environments.
Minimum 5 years in leadership or supervisory capacity.
Competency-based training systems.
Adult learning principles.
Mining equipment and operating practices.
Learning Management Systems
Experience managing competency, training, and workforce development programs.
Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and engaging operational stakeholders.
Demonstrated experience improving workforce capability and operational performance.
Demonstrated people leadership and management skills in a similar role.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Knowledge of Mine Safety Regulations and Industry Best practices.
Ability to demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.

The North Mara gold mine is located in north-west Tanzania in the Tarime district of the Mara region. It is around 100 kilometres east of Lake Victoria and 20 kilometres south of the Kenyan border.
North Mara started commercial production in 2002. The mine is a combined open pit and underground operation from two deposits, Gokona (underground) and Nyabirama (open pit). The process plant has the capacity to process an average of 8,000 tonnes of ore per day.
