About Asteron Life

Asteron Life has been supporting New Zealanders for nearly 150 years. We are here to help customers build bright futures and protect what matters most. We offer a range of personal, business and employee insurance products that can help our customers through just about anything life throws at you.

We work with our financial advisers, who provide expert insurance advice and match the right insurance needs to help our customers live life to the fullest, and our strategic partners who provide tools and information so customers can assess their needs and find the cover that’s best suited to them.

We value diverse backgrounds and perspectives, foster an inclusive, collaborative and flexible working environment, that will support your professional growth and reward your contribution.

The Opportunity

We're looking for a talented Underwriter to join our growing team on a permanent full-time basis, with the flexibility to be based in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch. As our business continues to expand, this is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative team where you'll be empowered to make decisions, build strong adviser relationships, and play a meaningful role in delivering outstanding customer outcomes.

We're particularly interested in connecting with experienced Intermediate Underwriters ready for their next career move; however, we're equally keen to hear from high-performing junior and senior professionals who bring the right mix of underwriting capability, commercial judgement and customer focus. You'll have the autonomy to make sound underwriting decisions, work through a diverse range of life, disability and trauma cases, and build trusted relationships with advisers by providing timely, pragmatic and well-reasoned solutions. Success in this role isn't just about technical underwriting expertise. It's also about delivering exceptional service, communicating confidently, and becoming a valued partner to advisers. We're looking for someone who can balance commercial thinking with effective risk management while delivering positive outcomes for advisers, customers and the business.

What sets this opportunity apart is the team. We genuinely support one another and recognise that our best outcomes are achieved when we work together. Whether it's helping a colleague manage a busy workload, sharing expertise on a complex case, or going the extra mile for advisers and customers, collaboration is part of our culture. We're looking for someone who values being part of a team, is willing to step in and support others when needed, and enjoys contributing to a positive and high-performing environment. If you're looking for a role where your ideas are valued, your development is supported, and you'll be part of a growing business with genuine flexibility, strong leadership and long-term career opportunities, we'd love to hear from you.

How will you make an impact?

  • Assess and underwrite life, disability and trauma insurance applications within delegated authority levels and company guidelines.

  • Deliver timely, high-quality underwriting decisions that balance sound risk management with commercially focused customer outcomes.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with advisers, becoming a trusted partner through responsive service and practical solutions.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the underwriting team, proactively supporting shared workloads and contributing to team success.

  • Liaise with reinsurers, medical professionals and other stakeholders to progress and resolve complex cases.

  • Conduct tele-underwriting and gather additional information where required to support quality decision-making and reduce application turnaround times.

  • Provide underwriting expertise and support to distribution and sales teams, helping deliver a positive adviser experience.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance service delivery, efficiency and customer outcomes.

  • Share knowledge, support team development and foster a collaborative, high-performing culture.

About you

To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate the following:

  • A minimum of 3 years' underwriting experience across life, disability and trauma insurance.

  • Strong underwriting and risk assessment capabilities, coupled with sound commercial judgement and the confidence to make and communicate decisions effectively.

  • A customer and adviser-focused approach, with a genuine passion for building relationships and delivering exceptional service.

  • Excellent relationship-building skills, with the ability to develop trust and credibility with advisers and key stakeholders.

  • An understanding of medical terminology, disease processes, treatments and prognosis.

  • The ability to interpret financial information and apply it to underwriting decisions.

  • A collaborative, team-first approach, with a willingness to support colleagues and contribute to shared success.

  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • A proactive and solutions-focused mindset, with the ability to balance customer outcomes and risk considerations.

  • A passion for continuous learning and professional development
