About this role

This position is a 1.0 FTE located at the Syphax Education Center with the Department of Student Services. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide teachers and other school personnel with pertinent information about the student’s home environment and social and emotional functions.
  • Participate as a member of a multi-disciplinary team in identifying and serving students with special needs and abilities; prepare socio-cultural reports.
  • Assist parents in understanding and helping their children and in making the best use of community resources.
  • Interpret to parents the policies, functions and objectives of the school as well as the implications of IDEA where applicable.
  • Assist with/conduct parent/teacher workshops.
  • Assist in coordinating the efforts of the home, the school, and the community agencies in working with
    students.
  • Act as a liaison between the school and the juvenile court. Emphasize the importance of regular school attendance and interpret the attendance
    regulations to parents.
  • Support school staff with monitoring and addressing attendance issues. Counsel individuals and groups. Crisis intervention.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Pupil Services.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:
 

  • Must have or be eligible for Virginia licensure.
  • Masters degree in social work, supervised practicum of field experience in an educational agency, or a minimum of one year as a full-time school
    social worker.
  • Good knowledge of Office of Pupil Services functions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to complete sociocultural assessments.
  • Ability to meet monitor and meet deadlines.
  • Technology skills (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, Power Point).
  • Ability to work effectively with staff and parents from various cultural backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of the resources and programs of the Arlington Public Schools and the local community.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws (e.g., IDEA, Section 504).

     

SALARY: Salary based on the 2026-27 salary schedule.
