Aon South Africa is recruiting a Company Legal Advisory in our Legal & Compliance department based, on a hybrid basis, from our Head Office in Sandton. The role of the Company Legal Advisor is to perform legal services and functions within the Aon group. This includes providing legal support, guidance and representation to the business, with a particular focus on commercial law and litigation matters, and providing support and back‑up to the company senior legal advisors (commercial and litigation). The role will further provide an opportunity to work with the EMEA litigation team, and allows for the candidate to gain global exposure on litigation matters, by providing legal support to the global litigation teams based in the UK.

What the day will look like
Litigation
- Evaluate and assess the risk to Aon of all potential legal matters and claims.
- Record and capture details/circumstances of all potential claims on the internal systems and provide regular input and updates on all claims.
- Investigate the merits of all claims, record witness statements and collate all documents relevant to all claims.
- Provide advice to the business on the merits of any defenses to any claim as well as on settlement of claims.
- Provide ad hoc legal advice to the business as required.
- Provide assistance from a legal perspective in the resolution of client, FSCA, Ombud complaints as and when required.
- Establish a good working relationship with business role players and an in‑depth understanding of the Aon business.
- Support internal and external attorneys to defend any action instituted against Aon and work in conjunction with external attorneys in protecting the interests of Aon.
- Play an active role in the drafting of pleadings and the legal strategy employed by Aon in any matter.
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with external attorneys instructed by Aon.
- Conduct quarterly reviews of all litigious matters and provide further input when required to the Aon Global Legal team.
- Contribute towards the establishment of a sound legal risk management culture within Aon.
- Develop and train the business on Aon’s Errors and Omissions (“E&O”) policies.
- Attend and present matters to the E&O committee.
- Assist in the rollout of Aon legal procedures to the business.
- Assist with overflow commercial and regulatory legal work.
- Review, negotiate, draft and amend agreements such as:
- Service level agreements
- Indemnity forms and disclaimers
- Intermediary agreements
- Lease agreements
- Non‑disclosure agreements
- Settlement agreements
- Sponsorship agreements
- Other commercial agreements as required
- Provide assistance when terminating agreements.
- Review tenders and provide general legal support regarding the submission of tenders and commissioned tender documents.

Skills and experience that will lead to success
Qualifications
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- Legal degree (LLB or similar).
- Admitted to practice as an attorney in South Africa.
Knowledge
- Excellent knowledge of legal principles and litigation strategy.
- Sound understanding of the rules of court and civil procedure.
- Good knowledge of drafting and vetting of contracts.
- Digital literacy in MS Word and Excel.
- Knowledge and experience in mediation, arbitration and litigation.
- Knowledge of the South African and international short‑term insurance markets and intermediary regulations and practices will be an advantage.
- Knowledge of insurance, intermediary or financial industry will be an advantage.
Skills and Attributes
- Ability to record witness statements accurately.
- Good communication skills and the ability to interact at all levels.
- Ability to work competently in and with teams and business collaborators.
- Well‑developed report writing skills.
- Well‑developed presentation skills.
- Excellent negotiating and persuading skills.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years’ post‑admission experience in commercial and insurance litigation either obtained in private practice or inhouse.
