Job Summary:

The Simulation Specialist, Power Electronics Modelling is responsible for the development, validation, and support of real-time electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation models for power electronic converters and power system applications on RTDS NovaCor CPU and FPGA platforms. Working within a multidisciplinary R&D team, this role develops converter, controller, and network models, implements advanced simulation algorithms, and advances RTDS modelling capabilities. The position also supports customer projects by developing demonstration cases and proof-of-concept models that validate emerging technologies and customer-specific application requirements, as well as providing technical training, commissioning support, technical presentations, and participation in industry conferences and publications.

Position Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, validate, and maintain real-time electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation models for power electronic converters, control systems, and power system components on RTDS NovaCor CPU and FPGA platforms.
  • Design and implement mathematical algorithms, numerical techniques, and software/firmware solutions for real-time simulation using tools and languages such as C/C++, HLS, VHDL, and related development environments.
  • Collaborate with power electronics, hardware, software, and firmware engineers to develop, enhance, integrate, and validate RTDS modelling and simulation capabilities.
  • Develop demonstration cases and proof-of-concept models to evaluate emerging technologies, showcase new simulation capabilities, and address customer-specific application requirements.
  • Create, maintain, and document simulation examples, application notes, technical documentation, and training materials.
  • Provide technical support to customers for power electronics and real-time simulation applications, including model development assistance, troubleshooting, training, simulator installation, commissioning, and validation activities.
  • Prepare and present technical papers, presentations, and application-focused content; participate in industry conferences, trade shows, technical working groups, and customer engagements to promote RTDS technologies and applications.
  • Stay current with advances in power systems, power electronics, control systems, real-time simulation, and related technologies through technical literature, industry collaboration, and professional development activities.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (Ph.D. considered an asset) with specialization in power systems, power electronics, control systems, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of power electronic converters, control systems, and power system fundamentals.
  • Understanding of electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation principles, numerical methods, and real-time simulation techniques.
  • Experience in developing, implementing, or validating mathematical models and control algorithms for power system and/or power electronics applications.
  • Experience in software and/or FPGA development using languages and tools such as C/C++, VHDL, HLS, MATLAB/Simulink, or similar engineering development environments.
  • Familiarity with power system simulation tools such as RSCAD, PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, RTDS, or equivalent platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve productivity, decision-making, work quality, and to reduce costs. The successful candidate must be able to identify appropriate AI use cases and critically evaluate AI-generated outputs.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work on complex technical challenges independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment while managing multiple priorities.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally for customer support, training, commissioning, and industry events.
  • Ability to travel (up to 20% of work time).
