Job Summary: The Diesel and Equipment Mechanic II is a senior mechanic position in which the primary role is to carry out the maintenance of the D&SNG fleet of diesel locomotives, heavy equipment and on track vehicles such as motor cars, tampers and speed swings. Candidates should have the ability to carry out lengthy rebuilds of equipment while helping to keep projects on budget and schedule. This position will be primarily based out of the Durango yard however will include semi-regular work at other locations on the railroad.

The ideal candidate will be a self-motivated individual with the ability to work both individually and in a team-setting. Candidates should possess a strong knowledge of diesel and gas engines as well as vehicle and equipment maintenance procedures. Preference will be given to candidates who possess understanding of electrical and hydraulic systems and/or possess any trade skills such as welding or machining. Additional consideration will be given to candidates who have experience in carrying out multi month repairs and overhauls.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Perform routine maintenance, inspections and repairs on all necessary parts and components relating to diesel locomotives and on-track MOW equipment as required, including some railroad specific components, while working in a team environment.

Perform routine maintenance, inspections and repairs to various equipment electrical systems.

Perform routine repairs and diagnostics to Cummins, and Alco.

Perform routine maintenance, inspections and repairs to equipment including: Case tractors, Cat forklift, Pettibone equipment, John Deere excavator and Grove carry deck crane.

Carry out routine maintenance on Fairmont and Honda powered track cars, including wheels, brakes, drive trains and small engines.

Perform all manner of repair work and troubleshooting to tamping and ballast regulator machinery.

Carry out heavy repairs and overhauls of equipment.

Assist in the scheduling of repairs and maintenance of equipment.

Complete all required FRA, OSHA, and Company documentation of work performed on locomotives and equipment including repair reports.

Evaluate and recommend repair/replacement of equipment, parts and components.

Interpret verbal/written instructions and specifications, including reading blue prints, manuals and electrical schematics.

Assemble/disassemble parts and components of diesel locomotives and other equipment.

Perform basic locomotive servicing and daily inspections on equipment and diesel locomotives.

Compliance with D&SNGRR procedures, safety and operating rules.

Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education, Skill and Work Experience Requirements:

Ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal English.

Previous relevant diesel and gas engine experience.

Ability to troubleshoot, multi-task and think-on-your-feet.

Ability to use all variety of shop tools.

Understanding of electrical systems.

Understanding of hydraulic systems.

Welding, machining, or other trade skills a plus.

Must have a valid driver’s license.

Must be able to pass D&SNG pre-employment and ongoing physical capabilities exams.

Must have ability to operate heavy equipment such as loader, forklift, and tractor.

Work Conditions

Work primarily in a railroad shop environment with periods of outdoor work in all weather conditions.

Full-time, minimum 40 hours per week schedule

Extended periods of time walking, standing,

Regular lifting in excess of 50 pounds.
