Amentum is seeking a Marine Welder - Shipfitter to support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. The Marine Welder – Shipfitter will be responsible for performing welding, fabrication, installation, and structural repair work on marine vessels and associated systems. This position supports vessel maintenance, modernization, and repair by welding and fabricating structural components, piping systems, tanks, hull assemblies, and other shipboard equipment. The Marine Welder – Shipfitter ensures all work is completed in accordance with applicable military, commercial, and industry standards while maintaining the highest levels of safety, quality, and craftsmanship.
Job Responsibilities:
- Perform welding, fabrication, and structural repair on marine vessels, equipment, and shipboard systems.
- Weld various metals and alloys, including high tensile steel, copper nickel alloys, aluminum, stainless steel, and carbon steel.
- Repair, fabricate, and install structural components including bulkheads, decks, frames, foundations, supports, brackets, and hull sections.
- Perform shipfitting duties including measuring, cutting, fitting, aligning, and assembling metal components.
- Fabricate and install piping systems for high pressure steam, compressed air, fuel, hydraulic, ballast, and other shipboard systems.
- Weld tanks, pressure vessels, hull penetrations, and structural reinforcements in accordance with approved procedures.
- Read, interpret, and work from blueprints, technical drawings, welding symbols, schematics, and engineering specifications.
- Prepare materials by cutting, grinding, beveling, cleaning, and fitting components prior to welding.
- Operate welding equipment including SMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG), FCAW (Flux Core), and oxy-fuel cutting equipment as required.
- Operate fabrication equipment including grinders, cutting torches, plasma cutters, drill presses, and other metalworking tools.
- Inspect welds and fabricated assemblies to ensure compliance with applicable codes, specifications, and quality standards.
- Maintain welding certifications and perform work in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications.
- Identify defects and perform corrective repairs as required.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment while following all safety regulations and environmental requirements.
- Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment and follow confined space, hot work, and hazardous material safety procedures.
- Support dry dock maintenance, vessel overhauls, modernization projects, and emergency repairs.
- Perform preventive maintenance on welding and fabrication equipment.
- Complete required documentation, inspection reports, and maintenance records.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the position.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience in shipboard welding, fabrication, or marine structural repair.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current certifications in welding procedures for multiple materials, including high tensile steel, Cu-Ni alloys, and aluminum.
- Certification and demonstrated experience welding shipboard systems, including high pressure steam, compressed air, fuel piping, tanks, and hull components.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, welding symbols, and technical specifications.
- Proficiency in operating welding equipment, cutting torches, grinders, plasma cutters, and fabrication tools.
- Strong knowledge of welding techniques, metallurgy, fabrication methods, and marine construction practices.
- Thorough understanding of occupational safety regulations related to welding, hot work, confined spaces, and shipboard maintenance.
- Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
- Passport must be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
- Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
- Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout the duration of deployment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
- Must be able to speak, read, and comprehend English.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce
- A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle. Valid country driver’s license. and passport.
- Experience working in U.S. Navy, Military Seatlift Command (MSC), or commercial shipyard environments.
- Experience fabricating and repairing advanced marine piping systems and specialized shipboard equipment.
- Experience performing pressure vessel and high pressure piping welds.

Working Environment
This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in office, industrial, warehouse, port, airfield, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.
Physical Requirements
Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
