Amentum is seeking a Marine Sandblaster - Painter to support a unique US Navy program on the island of Diego Garcia. The Marine Sandblaster - Painter will be responsible for preparing, restoring, and finishing a variety of interior and exterior surfaces on marine vessels, equipment, facilities, and associated structures. This position performs abrasive blasting, surface preparation, painting, and protective coating applications to ensure corrosion prevention, structural preservation, and compliance with quality and safety standards.
Job Responsibilities:
- Prepare surfaces for painting and protective coatings by sanding, scuffing, scraping, wire brushing, grinding, stripping, or abrasive blasting.
- Perform sandblasting operations to remove rust, corrosion, old coatings, marine growth, and other contaminants from metal and structural surfaces.
- Apply primers, sealers, paints, stains, varnishes, enamels, epoxies, and specialty marine coatings using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
- Prepare bare wood, metal, and other substrates for finish coats by applying appropriate primers and sealers.
- Protect surrounding equipment and surfaces using masking materials, drop cloths, plastic sheeting, and tape.
- Fill cracks, holes, joints, and surface imperfections using caulk, putty, plaster, or other approved fillers.
- Remove and reinstall fixtures, hardware, switch covers, lighting components, and similar items as required to complete painting activities.
- Smooth finished surfaces using sandpaper, steel wool, scrapers, brushes, or power sanding equipment to achieve required finish quality.
- Waterproof structures and surfaces using approved waterproofing membranes, sealants, and caulking materials.
- Read and interpret work orders, technical drawings, specifications, and supervisor instructions to determine project requirements.
- Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with quality standards and coating specifications.
- Safely erect and work from ladders, scaffolding, staging, and elevated work platforms when required.
- Operate and maintain painting, blasting, and surface preparation equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and safety procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area while complying with all environmental, health, and safety regulations.
- Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment and follow hazardous material handling procedures.
- Support vessel maintenance, repair, and preservation activities as assigned.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the nature and level of the position.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in paint preparation, abrasive blasting, sanding, scuffing, painting, or a related field.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience operating painting and surface preparation equipment.
- Must be in possession of a valid passport and be able to travel internationally.
- Passport must be valid for a minimum of one (1) year or more at the time of hiring.
- Ability to obtain country-specific visas per the U.S. Department of State Foreign Clearance Guide.
- Ability to successfully pass contract medical requirements and maintain compliance throughout the duration of deployment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
- Must be able to speak, read, and comprehend English.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience working in an austere OCONUS (Outside the Continental United States) environment with a multi-national workforce
- A valid driver’s license to legally operate a motor vehicle. Valid country driver’s license. and passport.
- Knowledge of marine surface preparation, corrosion control, and protective coating systems.
- Experience preparing and painting marine vessels, industrial equipment, buildings, and structural components.
- Knowledge of abrasive blasting techniques and coating application standards.
- Ability to recognize occupational hazards associated with painting and blasting operations and implement appropriate safety precautions.
- Experience working independently with sound judgement and decision making skills.

Working Environment
This position is located on Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), a remote overseas location supporting U.S. Government operations. Employees may work in office, industrial, warehouse, port, airfield, and outdoor environments and may be exposed to high temperatures, humidity, inclement weather, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work schedules may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours based on operational requirements.
Physical Requirements
Requirements may include prolonged sitting, standing, walking, climbing stairs, lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and 50 pounds occasionally, and working in both indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to meet all medical, security, and deployment requirements associated with assignment to a remote overseas location.
