Emergency Response Specialist
Position Summary
Our office needs a reliable and talented DOT Emergency Response Specialist. Your work as a Specialist will make a real difference as you provide assistance to various Domestic and International clients during emergency situations.
The DOT Emergency Response Specialist provides hazardous material information to clients, first responders, government agencies, and the general public. We obtain critical information about incidents and provide emergency notifications to our clients to address hazardous material leaks, spills, and chemical exposures. We educate ourselves on federal regulations to help guide our clients through state & federal spill reporting to ensure compliance. We play a vital role in ensuring the safety of our clients and their facilities, but most importantly, the public and our environment.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience supporting activities related to emergency response and/or incident management. This position requires professional demeanor and strong verbal and written communication skills. We are looking for a self-motivated, responsible, and confident individual with a commitment to integrity and the ability to prioritize multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work collaboratively with minimal supervision.

Essential Functions
- Promptly answer emergency calls about DOT incidents, rail-car incidents, chemical leaks/spills/exposures, and facility issues, and provide general company information to callers.
- Promptly answer calls on behalf of the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and compile a detailed report of chemical spills and public health concerns.
- Reach after-hours Emergency Contacts via phone/email/text to convey critical information.
- Dispense emergency hazmat / SDS information to clients, emergency personnel, and the general public during high-stress situations such as spills, leaks, and exposures.
- Maintain composure and manage incidents in a confident, concise manner that represents the organization's standard of service.
- Compose comprehensive reports in our database in an accurate but timely fashion.
- Operate with minimal supervision to triage incidents using open-source and company resources and good judgment.
- Upload and organize Safety Data Sheets to our database from email correspondence.
- Fulfill Safety Data Sheet requests by performing database searches to locate accurate documents and reply via email.
- Assist with large-scale client projects such as researching products to ensure chemical/shipping classification is accurate.
- Provide Hazmat shipping regulatory compliance knowledge to clients
- Generate shipping documents and provide regulatory compliance knowledge for third party carriers contracted by clients for shipping needs 24/7
- Maintain DOT/Hazmat training certifications and SDS authoring certifications to meet constantly changing industry standards and to develop potential new lines of business
- Review and help update hazmat training materials provided to clients to meet industry standards of competency
- Complete incident reports and documentation, duty logs, and shift hand-off briefings
Minimum Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Intermediate level skill with Microsoft Office products specifically Microsoft Teams and SharePoint
- Intermediate level computer literacy supporting a variety of software platforms
- Must be capable of typing 30+ WPM
- Punctual and dependable with the ability and willingness to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-demand (during emergencies)
- Adaptable and patient with the ability to remain calm and professional during times of heightened activity, uncertainty, ambiguity, rapid change, and fixed deadlines
- Ability to communicate clearly, succinctly, and in a manner that appeals to a wide audience
- Ability to triage complex situations and effectively transcribe information accurately
- Ability to remain patient to professionally support international callers where English is not their primary language
- Capable of following a procedure and executing tasks as outlined within a procedure
- Must have basic computer skills and be proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite
Preferred Job Requirements
- Previous experience in emergency response, incident management preferred
- Prior incident/emergency dispatch role preferred; preferably in emergency dispatch or hazardous notification center
- Previous customer service experience
