Coal Business Director
About this role
Our client is a multinational industrial and technology group with large-scale manufacturing and trading operations across international markets. The organization is seeking an experienced commercial leader to drive the growth and development of its coal trading business in Vietnam.
Role Objective
The Coal Business Director will be responsible for developing and executing the business strategy for the coal portfolio in Vietnam, including coke, semi-coke, coking coal, thermal coal, and bio-coal.
This role will lead market development, strategic customer acquisition, revenue and profitability management, commercial risk control, and overall business operations to ensure sustainable growth and long-term commercial performance.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and execute short-, medium-, and long-term business strategies and commercial plans for the thermal coal and coke business in Vietnam.
- Build and expand the B2B customer portfolio, with a focus on companies operating in power generation, cement, steel, metallurgy, heavy industry, and other coal-consuming sectors.
- Identify, negotiate with, establish, and maintain relationships with strategic customers, suppliers, logistics providers, ports, and other relevant stakeholders to secure supply and optimize commercial performance.
- Take overall responsibility for the business unit's revenue, sales volume, profitability, accounts receivable, and overall financial performance against agreed targets.
- Monitor and analyze market developments, supply-demand dynamics, pricing trends, industry regulations, competitor activities, and customer requirements to identify business opportunities and recommend appropriate commercial strategies.
- Develop pricing strategies, commercial proposals, sales mechanisms, and market-development approaches for different customer segments.
- Lead negotiations for major commercial contracts and oversee key contractual terms relating to pricing, payment, delivery, product quality, and associated commercial risks.
- Work closely with Procurement, Logistics, Finance, Legal, and Risk Management teams to ensure timely delivery, product quality, effective receivables collection, and operational efficiency.
- Lead, coach, and develop the coal business team; establish clear performance objectives, delegation mechanisms, and management processes to ensure delivery against business targets.
- Review and optimize the end-to-end sales process, from customer development, quotation and negotiation through contract execution, delivery, and after-sales support.
- Represent the business unit in meetings and engagements with customers, business partners, industry associations, and relevant external stakeholders when required.
- Prepare periodic and ad-hoc reports on business performance, execution plans, market developments, and strategic recommendations for senior management.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned by authorized management.
Requirements
Education
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Economics, Commerce, International Trade, Business Administration, Logistics, Energy, Metallurgy, Mining/Minerals, or a related discipline.
Professional Experience
- Minimum 10 years of experience in commodities trading, industrial raw materials, industrial products, or B2B sales.
- At least 3–5 years of management experience in a senior commercial position such as Head of Sales, Sales Director, Business Director, or equivalent.
- Existing customer relationships within the power generation, cement, steel, metallurgy, or heavy-industry sectors in Vietnam are highly advantageous.
- Previous experience with companies operating in coal trading, energy, minerals, commodities, or industrial raw-material trading is preferred.
Technical & Commercial Knowledge
- Strong understanding of the Vietnamese coal market, including supply-demand dynamics, customer purchasing behavior, sales mechanisms, supply-chain structures, and key pricing drivers.
- Good knowledge of the main quality specifications for thermal coal and coke, as well as delivery terms, logistics, inventory management, cargo handling, and quality-claim resolution.
- Strong understanding of commercial contracts, payment terms, credit and receivables management, and commodity-trading risk controls.
- Solid knowledge of B2B sales processes and commercial operations within industrial raw-material businesses.
