Associate Director, Translational Physician-Scientist

On-site$202k – $274k

About this role

Overview

The Research Department at Alnylam is seeking a passionate and creative physician-scientist to join the Translational Research Group to play a key role in guiding the discovery, validation, and prioritization of new therapeutic targets. You will join a highly collaborative team of translational biologists, proteomics scientists, metabolomics scientists, physician-scientists, and data scientists to enhance the translation of basic discoveries in biology and human genetics to new medicines. Our Research Department is a fast-paced and dynamic environment where promising new ideas rapidly progress to the clinic. This is an excellent opportunity for academic physician-scientists looking to transition into drug development. Working on-site in Cambridge, MA, you will collaborate across our Research, Early Development, and Clinical Research teams to drive programs from lead target identification through early-stage (Ph1/2) clinical trials.

Key Attributes and Responsibilities

  • Integrate knowledge of medicine with insights from human data including genetics, natural history studies, and clinical trials to generate and vet novel therapeutic hypotheses.
  • Play a leading role in identifying early translational and clinical key opinion leaders, driving scientific discussions, and building external relationships that support human sample sourcing and translational modeling.
  • Evaluate the scientific rationale and clinical feasibility of indications for new targets, using medical knowledge to guide preclinical and translational strategy.
  • Lead early biomarker strategy across multiple programs, collaborating with in-house data scientists, molecular biologists, and computational experts to align biomarker discovery with emerging clinical plans.
  • Represent Translational Research across preclinical and clinical development, from lead target identification through Phase 2 clinical trials, by engaging key stakeholders, presenting to leadership, and contributing to trial design and biomarker discovery and development.

Qualifications

  • Proven track record of putting basic sciences questions in a translational/clinical context.
  • MD or MD/PhD with a strong foundation in a subspeciality with sufficient exposure to a breadth of rare and common diseases.
  • Capacity to quickly synthesize the clinical trial landscape and contribute to trial design (prior industry experience is highly valued, but not required for a candidate with strong scientific fundamentals).
  • Exceptional scientific communication skills with a proven ability to draft high-impact manuscripts, present to leadership, and independently balance long-term strategic projects with time-sensitive, fast-paced requests.
  • Experience in academia or industry with human genetics, biomarker discovery, or therapeutic development. Familiarity with computational biology, bioinformatics, or working closely with statistical geneticists is a strong plus.
