About this role

Daikin Comfort Technologies is seeking a professional, skilled  Principal Engineer to join our engineering team to develop and sustain residential and/or commercial HVAC related products. The  Principal Engineer will provide technical expertise in areas of HVAC new product development. The individual will understand the product requirements and will provide practical applications of existing and/or new technology to aid in the development and sustainment of HVAC product. 

Position Responsibilities May include: 

  • Develop and support the knowledge growth of the engineering team, providing Thermodynamic, Heat transfer and Refrigeration guidance and training, 
  • Work with new product development team to evaluate quality improvement (QIP) and design for manufacturing (DFM) plans and provide solutions to be included in new product development testing 
  • Participate in product developments from Design Engineering team, providing technical insight and support, including engineering test results analysis, simulation analysis, trade-off analysis, decision making and report-out to leadership team 
  • Provide technical coaching, mentoring to a team of design engineers during the development and execution of the projects 
  • Participates in execution of technology that can be patented for the organization 
  • Develop engineering test standards, specifications, and design guidelines, 
  • Coordinate the development of main engineering documentation (DFMEA, Test Plan, simulation plan, design review workbook, etc) 
  • Support design review meetings, stage gate and project reviews with cross functional team 
  • Assist is developing product design technology roadmaps 
  • Define and implement continuous improvement activities, lean initiatives, and apply design for manufacturing (DFM) during design phase. 
  • Perform additional projects/duties to support ongoing business needs.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Comprehensive understanding and knowledge of mechanical design engineering theory and practice. 
  • In-depth knowledge of refrigeration and/or air conditioning design and application with specific emphasis  
  • In-depth technical understanding of vapor compression system, fluid mechanics, fans, blowers, compressors, TXVs, EEV, evaporator and condenser design/selection. 
  • Experience with design for six sigma (DFSS), design failure modes and effects analysis (DFMEA), design of experiments methodology, tolerance analysis, value engineering principles, and parts standardization principles.  
  • Good understanding of system electrical & controls 
  • Knowledge of specifications and international standards used in the Global HVAC industry 
  • Experience working in the regulatory environment and aware of the standards- AHRI, ASHRAE, UL. 
  • Working knowledge with computer simulations and CAD systems 
  • Proficient software skills including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Project 
  • Strong and effective Project Management skills; effective Organizational and time management skills 
  • Strong Analytical and Problem-Solving skills 
  • Effective Communication and Collaboration skills; Team player and establish positive working relationships with internal and external customers 
  • Ability to apply good Judgement, has strong work ethic and maintains integrity on the job. 

Experience:

  • 15 plus years of HVAC and/or automotive industry related experience with product design, development and launch 
  • 8 + years of experience with product design in the automotive, appliance, or HVAC industry  
  • At least 3 plus years of project management experience 

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required 
  • M.S in Mechanical Engineering  
  • Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt certification – strongly preferred 
  • Project Management certification - preferred
