Application Engineer (Phase Retrieval)
About this role
About us
AIM Solutions is an early-stage deep-tech startup in Eindhoven building inspection and metrology equipment for the semiconductor industry. We are in active build phase, small, and growing.
The role
You will own the path from a raw measurement to a reconstructed image, and the analysis that follows it. We want a data-minded engineer who can take this workflow end to end and grow into our in-house expert on it.
Concretely, you will:
Own the end-to-end pipeline from data acquisition to reconstructed image: decide what to measure, configure and run the reconstruction pipeline, and turn raw datasets into results
Translate industry test cases and customer requirements into measurement and process recipes, combining them into an automated, single-button-press execution workflow
Analyze data rigorously and carry out deeper investigations when results need explaining
Drive the experiment iteration loops with the optics and hardware teams
Your profile
Background in phase retrieval and coherent optics: ptychography, coherent diffractive imaging, holography, or Fourier-optics-based imaging. You have worked with coherent measurement data before
Rigorous, hands-on data analysis combined with strong Python and software engineering. You build and maintain a full pipeline from data ingest to analysis, with reproducible recipes
A systematic, experimental mindset: you design clean numerical experiments and know what to change to improve a result
Comfortable with scientific Python and array frameworks (NumPy, SciPy, and ideally PyTorch or JAX)
Comfortable collaborating with optics, hardware, and industry advisors; capable of translating engineering questions and field problems into clear, repeatable test cases
Technical curiosity; we will teach you our computational imaging methods and the metrology domain
Full professional proficiency in English
Bonus experience in any of these:
[Strongest bonus] Hands-on ptychography experience. Note: broader computational imaging (e.g., tomography) is valuable but not a substitute for coherent-optics experience in this role
Machine learning, especially applied to physics-based or scientific data
Numerical optimization (gradient-based methods)
Data visualization and analysis
GPU-accelerated computing (CUDA, JAX, PyTorch)
Scientific data formats and large-dataset handling (HDF5)
Linux development environments
We are open on seniority and background. If you analyze data rigorously, build solid pipelines, and learn fast, we want to talk and find a scope for the role to fit you.
What we offer
Full ownership of the measurement-to-results pipeline of a tool that does not exist anywhere else yet
Small team, short feedback loops, an open environment to have real impact
