About the Role
We are looking for high calibre candidate who can cover the following aspects.• Strategic Oversight of Private Assets: AIA is expected to increase its private assets portfolio (e.g., private credit, private equities and real estate) and enhance the risk management in this area over the coming years. The Associate Director of Private Asset Risk role is dedicated to assessing and managing risks arising from private asset investments, ideally filled by an investment professional with hands-on experience in managing alternative assets and a track record in reputable, multi-national asset management companies.
• Main Objective: Develop a comprehensive risk framework for private assets, focusing on intrinsic risks such as liquidity risk, valuation risk, leverage, complexity and concentration. Perform risk assessments on private asset investments covering the strategy, investment process, valuation, models, fund structure, risk monitoring and control aspects. The role is critical in ensuring that the Group has robust and effective private asset investments delivering the expected financial outcome without introducing undue financial or operational risks.
• Collaborative Partnership: Work closely with Finance teams (e.g., Group Capital Management, Group Actuarial, Group Corporate Centre), Investments teams (e.g., Investment Consulting Unit, Investment Governance, head of respective asset classes) and AIA AMCs to perform holistic forward-looking risk management for private assets. This role will also work closely with local Risk, Finance, and Investment teams to support them in executing the private assets risk framework, ensuring efficient resource use, consistency, and systematic knowledge transfer.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Develop Risk Framework: Develop a comprehensive risk framework for private assets, focusing on intrinsic risks such as liquidity risk, valuation risk, leverage, and concentration.
- Lead Risk Assessments: Assess new private asset investments involving distinct risk profile or complex structures and provide risk insights to senior approvers including Group CRO, CFO, and CIO.
- Independent Risk Reviews: Review existing investments to generate risk insights and improve risk monitoring, management and reporting.
- Stay Updated: Keep abreast of developments in private assets markets, including regulatory changes and industry trends.
- Point of Contact: Act as the principal contact for private assets risk matters with various internal and external stakeholders, providing guidance to the business and ensuring issues are fully identified and properly mitigated with appropriate action plans.
- Asset Management Companies (AMC): Provide support to AMCs in Singapore, China, Thailand and the Philippines in shaping their risk management framework.
- Ad-hoc Projects: Lead and participate in ad-hoc projects related to private assets based on senior management or Group Office requests or external developments.
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Over 7 years of relevant experience in private assets risk management, with a proven track record in reputable, multi-national asset management companies.
- Good understanding of insurance asset allocation, especially the roles of private assets and its implication on solvency, liquidity and financial metrics.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with authority and confidence, both to technical and non-technical audiences, are essential.
- Being a qualified actuary is an advantage. CFA or CAIA credentials are also preferred.
