About this role

AEA on behalf of a client is seeking to recruit a competent and motivated Advocate with 2–3 years post-admission experience to provide litigation and employment law support.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

A. Litigation & Court Practice

  • Providing litigation support in ongoing matters across courts and labour office
  • Attending court mentions, hearings, and proceedings on behalf of the organization
  • Drafting pleadings, submissions, and other court documents
  • Putting in place litigation containment measures
  • Collaborating with members to devise efficient defence strategies
  • Representing the organization in social dialogue meetings

B. Employment & Labour Law Advisory

  • Reviewing employment contracts, HR policies, disciplinary records, and related legal documentation
  • Supporting employment and labour relations advisory work, including dispute resolution processes
  • Providing accurate and timely legal counsel to members
  • Ensuring legal conformity and minimizing members’ exposure to legal risk
  • Advising members on compliance with laws and regulations through detailed reports
  • Updating members on changes in legislation with direct impact on their business
  • Reviewing agreements to ensure employer exposure is minimized
  • Preparing legal opinions for members

C. Compliance, Governance & Risk Management

  • Implementing and managing an effective legal compliance program
  • Developing and reviewing company policies
  • Assessing company operations to determine compliance risk
  • Conducting regular audits of procedures, practices, and documents to identify weaknesses or risks
  • Creating and managing action plans in response to audit findings and compliance violations
  • Ensuring members are educated on the latest regulations and compliance processes
  • Resolving employer concerns and disputes on legal compliance
  • Specifying internal governance policies and monitoring compliance
  • Researching and evaluating risk factors regarding business decisions and operations
  • Applying effective risk management techniques and offering proactive legal advice

D. Member Support & Capacity Building

  • Acting as a one-stop shop for legal advisory services for members
  • Drafting and sharing legal templates as appropriate
  • Providing training on use of documented templates
  • Updating policies and procedures to bridge identified gaps
  • Ensuring documents meet statutory requirements
  • Benchmarking against industry practices
  • Facilitating various association meetings and acting as secretary where required

E. Reporting & Administration

  • Preparing case summaries, compliance updates, and litigation status reports
  • Performing any other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Legal, Industrial Relations and Compliance

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized university
  • Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practicing certificate
  • 2–3 years post-admission experience
  • Strong exposure to employment and labour relations law will be an added advantage
  • Demonstrated litigation experience, including court attendance and drafting
  • Strong legal drafting, research, and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently under tight deadlines
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and attention to detail

Reporting Line

The Advocate will report directly to the Head of Legal.
