Software Architect - High-Performance Image Visualization
About this role
Software Architect – High-Performance Image Visualization
Location: Vienna, Austria
Your code could save lives!
We are hiring an experienced, hands-on Software Architect to help shape the next generation of our medical image-viewing applications.
Our Enterprise Imaging solution enables healthcare professionals to access and interact with medical images through desktop and web applications. We are looking for an engineer who can combine strong Angular and TypeScript development skills with expertise in high-performance, low-latency visualization.
This role combines hands-on software development with technical leadership. You will define the architecture of reusable image-viewing components, investigate performance bottlenecks and guide development teams in delivering responsive and scalable visualization capabilities.
We are also interested in candidates from adjacent domains such as game development, graphics engines, scientific visualization, simulation, computer-aided design or advanced image-editing applications.
Job Duties & Accountabilities
- Define and evolve the architecture of high-performance image-viewing and interaction components.
- Design reusable frontend components that can be integrated across our medical imaging applications.
- Contribute hands-on to prototypes, reference implementations and technically complex product development.
- Analyse and optimize rendering performance, responsiveness, memory consumption and user interaction latency.
- Identify CPU, GPU, browser and network bottlenecks and translate findings into architectural and implementation improvements.
- Evaluate and select appropriate technologies, frameworks and rendering approaches.
- Establish technical guidelines for component design, state management, rendering, testing and performance measurement.
- Define measurable performance targets and ensure that these are validated through automated tests and representative datasets.
- Work closely with software engineers, UX designers, product management and clinical stakeholders to translate workflow requirements into effective technical solutions.
- Collaborate with architects and development teams across locations to ensure alignment with the overall Enterprise Imaging architecture.
- Create and maintain architecture decisions, technical guidelines and supporting documentation.
- Mentor engineers and support teams in solving complex visualization and performance-related challenges.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least eight years of professional software-development experience, including experience in a senior technical-leadership or architecture role.
- Strong hands-on experience with Angular, TypeScript and modern frontend application architecture.
- Experience designing complex, reusable frontend components or application frameworks.
- Deep understanding of browser behaviour, rendering pipelines, asynchronous processing, state management and frontend performance.
- Practical experience profiling and troubleshooting performance, memory and responsiveness issues.
- Strong understanding of software architecture principles, data structures, algorithms and maintainable API design.
- Experience with automated unit, integration and end-to-end testing.
- Ability to turn ambiguous or complex technical problems into practical designs and implementations.
- Excellent English communication skills and the ability to explain technical decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to influence, mentor and guide engineers across multiple teams without requiring direct managerial responsibility.
Assets – optional but beneficial
- Experience with WebGL, WebGPU, Canvas, Web Workers, WebAssembly or comparable browser-based rendering technologies.
- Experience developing game engines, rendering engines, simulations, visualization platforms or advanced image-editing applications.
- Knowledge of GPU architecture, CPU/GPU interaction, multithreading, memory management or real-time rendering.
- Experience with OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX, C++, Unity, Unreal Engine, Three.js, PixiJS or similar technologies.
- Experience working with large image datasets, tiled or streamed images and progressive rendering.
- Experience with medical imaging, DICOM, PACS, diagnostic viewers or healthcare workflows.
- Experience with Java, Spring and cloud-native application development.
- Experience developing software in a regulated environment.
- Experience as a System, Solution or Software Architect in SAFe.
Technology environment
Angular, TypeScript, Java, Spring, Git, Gradle, Jenkins, Kubernetes, Rancher, OpenSearch and Grafana.
