UX Designer

Sydney, Australia · On-site

About this role

The opportunity:

As a UX/UI Designer within the Navigation Solutions team, you will tackle the unique challenge of making highly complex, safety-critical data intuitive and actionable. You will own the end-to-end design process for our software interfaces, web configurations, and diagnostic applications used by engineers, defense operators, pilots, and roboticists worldwide.

Your work will directly impact how users interact with dense real-time telemetry, 3D spatial mapping, and mission-critical hardware configurations.

Key responsibilities

1. User Research & Discovery

Conduct qualitative and quantitative user research with deeply technical end-users (e.g., aerospace engineers, marine surveyors, autonomous vehicle operators).

Translate complex mission workflows, telemetry requirements, and technical constraints into user journey maps, personas, and task flows.

Validate design concepts through rigorous usability testing, utilizing hardware simulators or actual field-testing data.

2. Interaction & Visual Design

Design intuitive user interfaces for desktop, web, and specialized field displays that interpret high-frequency data feeds, 3D spatial environments, and system status alerts.

Champion accessibility and visual clarity, ensuring interfaces are highly legible under diverse environmental conditions (e.g., direct sunlight on a maritime vessel or low-light control rooms).

Create low-fidelity wireframes, interactive prototypes, and high-fidelity mockups that clearly communicate interaction models.

3. Design System & Collaboration

Contribute to and scale Advanced Navigation's unified design system, ensuring consistency across all software products and hardware utility tools.

Work in tight alignment with the Navigation Solutions engineering team, ensuring design specs are technically feasible and seamlessly integrated into agile development cycles.

Collaborate closely with Product Managers to align UI/UX improvements with the broader technical product roadmap.

4. Continuous Improvement & Culture

Embrace a "Progress over Perfection" mindset by deploying rapid design iterations to gather early feedback from technical internal stakeholders.

Advocate for user-centric design principles across the R&D and engineering departments, translating "engineering-speak" into meaningful human experiences.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Interaction Design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Product Design, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Experience: 3+ years of experience as a UX/UI Designer, preferably designing complex B2B desktop/web software, data-heavy dashboards, industrial control systems, or SaaS products.
  • Portfolio: A strong portfolio demonstrating a structured design process, technical problem-solving, clean visual design hierarchy, and interactive prototypes.
  • Technical & Design Competency
  • Expert proficiency in modern design tools, specifically Figma, and experience managing component libraries or design systems.
  • Exceptional ability to organize dense information architectures and simplify complex data visualization (e.g., charts, graphs, 3D mapping fields, and live telemetry data).
  • Understanding of modern front-end technologies (HTML/CSS, React, Qt/C++) is highly regarded (you won't be coding, but you must be able to speak the language of our software engineers).
  • Soft Skills & Culture Fit
  • High technical aptitude—you aren't intimidated by acronyms like GNSS, IMU, or LiDAR and are genuinely curious about robotics and AI.
  • Strong communication skills; able to confidently articulate design decisions to deeply technical engineering teams.
  • Exceptional empathy for specialized operators working in high-stress, safety-critical environments.
