Content Supervisor - HS Sports
About this role
NJ.com is seeking a versatile Content Supervisor to help lead our award-winning high school sports staff.
In this role, you will manage day-to-day digital coverage decisions during business hours, working closely with reporters to identify trends and story opportunities as they break. You'll partner closely with the Sr. Managing Producer and fellow supervisors to make sure the team's daytime coverage is sharp, fast, and aligned with what drives traffic and subscriptions.
We're looking for someone who has experience working in a fast-paced newsroom with a background in hands-on editing and management. The ideal candidate is someone who can spot a trend before it breaks and knows how to get the most out of both the coverage and the people producing it. Writing and reporting experience is preferred.
The base salary range for this role is $75,000 - $87,500 annually.
This role will require reliable transportation to cover events, close coordination with sources and staff across the state, and occasional night and weekend hours to support high school sports coverage.
What you'll do:
- Manage daytime coverage decisions, editing and directing reporters in real time as news breaks.
- Be versed in digital journalism — identifying emerging trends and topics that merit deeper coverage.
- Contribute deeper editing and idea-generation, working closely with other managers on the team.
- Continue to produce your own reporting and writing alongside your management duties.
- Partner with the Sr. Managing Producer and fellow Content Supervisors to keep daytime and overnight coverage connected.
- Help identify and develop reporters ready to take on more responsibility.
- Support the broader team's push toward content that drives subscriptions and reader retention.
What we're looking for:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- At least 1 year of management experience or 3+ years in sports journalism with demonstrated leadership skills
- A proven track record both writing and editing in a fast-paced newsroom.
- Strong news judgment and an ability to identify trends and story opportunities quickly.
- Experience managing or mentoring other reporters.
- Deep familiarity with the New Jersey high school sports landscape.
- An ability to balance hands-on management with your own active reporting and writing.
- A collaborative approach to working with fellow managers and across teams.
- An ability to work independently under tight deadlines while keeping a team aligned.
