Employee Relations Manager

Human Resources is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining AARP enterprise-wide human resource strategies, initiatives, policies, procedures and related systems. This includes employee compensation and benefits, organization design and integration, talent acquisition, talent development and employee relations.
The Employee Relations and Compliance Manager is responsible for monitoring and managing workplace investigations and recommending disciplinary action, as needed. The role also tracks employee relations issues and investigation trends to identify patterns and recommend systemic solutions. Additionally, the Employee Relations and Compliance Manager partners with cross-functional teams to identify and implement solutions that improve workplace culture and employee performance.
Responsibilities:
- Determines investigative plans, conducts thorough investigations, and documents investigative summary letters and supporting documentation that succinctly captures the issue to be addressed, processes utilized to address, and recommended solutions. Calls upon the legal and ethics and compliance team for collaboration, advice, and guidance, as needed.
- Uses insights and analytics to identify, catalog, and report on workplace trends. Utilizes expertise to determine issues, diagnose employee relations problems, and identify business solutions to address issues.
- Facilitates resolution of employee issues and concerns, in conjunction with Human Resources, the employee, and management. Provides guidance and consultation regarding problem solving, dispute resolution, regulatory compliance, and litigation avoidance. Strives to resolve internal conflict informally through appropriate conflict management and mediation techniques.
- Collaborates with Human Resources leadership and team members on the development and review of supporting documentation for all involuntary separations to ensure the organization has followed progressive discipline methods, where applicable.
- Provides advice and counsel to managers, supervisors, and employees regarding laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and practices related to employee relations matters.
- Ensures consistent application and interpretation of labor relations, employee relations, policies, contracts, and strategies. Applies knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and manages the interactive process for requests for reasonable accommodation, ensuring appropriate, legally compliant solutions.
- Shares knowledge and learnings with the business and Human Resources staff on employee relations matters and best practices, including performance management, terminations, restructuring, leave management and accommodation requests, workplace drug/alcohol/violence matters, conflict resolution, etc.
- Authors and advances improvements to the organization’s policies and procedures and monitors compliance. Assists in internal audits of employee relations issues and makes recommendations to resolve issues in accordance with company policies, practices, and procedures.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required, along with a minimum of five years of experience in Employee Relations and/or demonstrated experience and achievements in an HR Generalist capacity.
- Expertise in federal, state, and local laws and regulations, with the ability to interpret and apply HR policies.
- Ability to manage and multitask an ongoing caseload of workplace investigations while remaining highly organized and effectively navigating a matrixed stakeholder environment.
- Exceptional analytical skills, with the ability to quickly assimilate and synthesize complex data and information into a decision-making framework, communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, and develop compelling solutions.
- Strong listening skills and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with stakeholders at various levels.
- Absolute discretion and confidentiality regarding sensitive information, with the highest standards of ethical conduct and integrity.
- Comfort and proficiency with technology and applications such as Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams), PeopleSoft, and other relevant systems.

Hybrid Work Environment
AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.
