Full job description
Location: This is a hybrid role that requires 2-3 days on-site at our Burnaby, BC office.
Welcome to Specsavers – where we’re not just about eyecare and eyewear, but changing lives through better sight. Ranked the 5th Best Workplace™ in Canada and 12th globally by Great Place to Work®, we’re proud of our optometrist-owned model that makes high-quality, eyecare and eyewear accessible to all Canadians.
Founded 40 years ago in the UK by visionary husband and wife optometry duo Doug and Mary Perkins, Specsavers has remained privately owned since day one. Today, we are a $7.8 billion global business with over 45,000 colleagues across more than 2,700 retail optical locations.
In Canada, our support office is based in Burnaby, BC. Since entering the market in 2021, we’ve been scaling rapidly, now with over 270 locations nationwide. With advanced clinical equipment and a wide range of affordable, high-quality eyewear, we’re transforming the way Canadians experience eyecare.
If you’re passionate about making a difference and want to be part of a values-driven organization, join us as we continue to grow. Together, we can change lives through better sight.
What You’ll Do
As a Data Business Analyst, you'll be responsible for eliciting requirements and shaping solutions to business problems across the full reporting lifecycle — from requirements gathering through to delivery of reports and dashboards. You'll work within an Agile framework, acting as the conduit between the business, and our Data Engineers and Visualization Analysts.
Key Responsibilities
Gather and define detailed project requirements from across the Canadian business for data reporting products
Own the end-to-end reporting lifecycle, from requirements gathering, to solution design, build support, user acceptance testing, and deployment
Run workshops, interviews, and prototyping sessions to capture and refine requirements — including situations where requirements are unclear or priorities are shifting
Define and document data mappings, and end-to-end data flows
Support data governance, data quality, and master data management initiatives
Produce Business Requirement Documents (BRDs), Functional Specification Documents (FSDs), user stories, process flows, and acceptance criteria
Partner with Data Visualization Analysts to support the delivery of Power BI and self-service analytics solutions, ensuring outputs are intuitive, well-documented and accessible to business users
Ensure requirements are complete, consistent, concise, and verifiable — and traceable back to a genuine business need.
Provide input into new products and feature designs so that reporting and analytics needs are considered from the outset, not bolted on afterward
Manage scope changes and requirements during implementation
Partner with the Product Owner to refine and size the backlog
Maintain oversight of delivery, including scope, timelines, dependencies and expected outcomes
Proactively identify risks, blockers and potential delays, driving mitigation and escalation where required
Define acceptance criteria (Definition of Ready / Definition of Done) and support test planning and UAT
What We’re Looking For
3-5 years' experience as a Business Analyst, ideally on data or reporting products.
Demonstrated experience across the full reporting lifecycle (requirements through deployment)
Experience writing technical user stories and documentation
Ability to understand database schemas, including the relationships between objects and key terminology
Experience gathering requirements from diverse, sometimes non-technical stakeholders, including in situations with unclear requirements or changing priorities
Data profiling experience, including querying and profiling data using SQL
Exposure to a cloud data platform (AWS, Azure, or GCP)
Experience working within an Agile delivery methodology
Excellent communication skills — confident liaising with stakeholders at all levels, able to translate technical concepts for non-technical audiences
Sound analytical thinking, problem-solving, and negotiation skills
Self-motivated and comfortable working autonomously, while collaborating closely with the other Data Business Analysts
Nice-to-have:
Experience in a retail environment.
Technical data skills: Power BI or other visualization tools
Experience in data visualisation techniques and principles
Awareness of the use of AI to support in the Data BA space
Compensation: $95,000 - $115,000 base salary, plus quarterly bonus, profit sharing, and benefits. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience
Speccies’ Benefits
4 weeks of vacation and 1 paid volunteer day per year
1 extra paid day off plus an eyecare voucher to celebrate your birthday.
Health and dental benefits, RRSP matching and a Healthcare Spending Account active from your first day.
Mental health and wellbeing support, including $3,000 annually for practitioner care and access to our Employee Assistance Program.
Quarterly bonuses, based on your performance.
Annual Profit Share program to recognize your part in Specsavers’ success.
Free parking, access to the building gym, and a fully stocked kitchen with snacks and coffee/tea.
On‑site wellness offerings in-office, including RMT and yoga sessions.
Team and company social events, including holiday and annual celebrations.
