The Recycling Sorter is responsible for sorting recyclable materials and removing contaminants to ensure products meet industry specifications. They must also maintain a clean work area and adhere to all safety and PPE protocols.

Requirements

A high school diploma or GED is preferred, along with the ability to read, write, and speak English. Candidates must be physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and working in a shop environment with exposure to dust and noise.

Description

The Recycling Sorter is responsible for sorting recyclable materials and removing unacceptable materials from the recycling stream to ensure that the finished product meets industry specifications.   

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform duties in a safe manner in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations and company policies. 
  • Ensure proper personal protective equipment is utilized (ear plugs, glasses, gloves, dust mask, high visual safety clothing, etc.), as well as compliance with lock out, tag out procedures are adhered to consistently. 
  • Inspect materials and sort items into designated areas according to type, size, condition, color, or paper grade. 
  • Remove contaminants out of product stream or off of floor. 
  • Perform cleaning duties related to plant equipment and general housekeeping. 
  • Report system problems immediately to management. 
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area and surrounding area. 
  • Dump boxes and containers of material into designated area(s). 
  • Maintain an excellent attendance, safety, and work quality record. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager or Operations Assistant.  

Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   

Education/Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED preferred but not required.  
  • Experience in a similar industry, preferred. 

Language Skills:

Ability to read, write and speak English. Read/write simple instruction, simple business reports, or memos. Communicate clearly with coworkers, vendors, customers, and management team.  

Math Skills:

Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. 

 

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. 

 

Physical Demands and Work Environment:  

The physical demands and work environment described below represent the activities and surroundings of the positions. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend and twist from the waist and knees; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch and talk or hear.  

The employee must be able to lift, push, pull, unload, drag and carry from 10 to 50 pounds of paper, cardboard, and other recycling. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision and ability to adjust focus. 

The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme heat and cold weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to dust, noise, and fumes found in a shop environment.
