Job Title: Senior UX Designer

Reports to: Senior UX & CRO Manager

Location: schuh HQ Livingston, Scotland - hybrid, 2 days in office

Purpose: Responsible for leading and evolving the UX design function to support the Digital team's strategic objectives and drive continuous improvement across schuh's digital experience. This role combines hands-on design leadership with people management, ensuring customer needs, business goals, and technical considerations are aligned throughout the design process.

You will own and develop the UX design system, establishing best practices, standards, and scalable design solutions that deliver intuitive, accessible, and engaging customer experiences. Working closely with CRO, IT, Marketing and the wider Digital team, you will influence digital strategy, improve ways of working, and help deliver measurable improvements in customer experience and business performance.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Lead the UX design function, ensuring user-centred design principles are embedded across all digital products and customer journeys.
  • Define, maintain, and evolve the UX design system, ensuring consistency, scalability, accessibility, and adherence to best practice.
  • Manage, coach, and develop UX designers, supporting their professional growth, performance, and delivery of high-quality work.
  • Partner closely with CRO, IT, Marketing, and the wider Digital team to identify opportunities that improve customer experience and support commercial objectives.
  • Translate customer insights, user research, analytics, and business requirements into intuitive and effective design solutions.
  • Champion UX best practices and contribute to the development of effective processes, governance, and ways of working across the Digital team.
  • Lead the creation and validation of wireframes, prototypes, user flows, and interaction designs, ensuring solutions are grounded in user needs and business goals.
  • Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitor activity to identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement.

Technical Skills:

  • Expert proficiency in Figma, including design systems, prototyping, component management, documentation, and developer handoff.
  • Strong understanding of UX design, interaction design, information architecture, and user-centred design methodologies.
  • Experience building, maintaining, and governing design systems and component libraries across digital products.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG), responsive design principles, and inclusive design practices.
  • Ability to interpret user research, customer feedback, behavioural analytics, A/B testing results, and CRO insights to inform design decisions.
  • Strong understanding of ecommerce customer journeys and conversion-focused design principles.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence decisions at all levels of the organisation.
  • Experience collaborating effectively within Agile delivery teams and multidisciplinary environments.

Experience:

  • Significant experience in UX design within an ecommerce or digital-first environment, supported by a portfolio demonstrating end-to-end design thinking and measurable business impact.
  • Proven experience leading complex UX projects from discovery through to delivery, balancing customer needs, business objectives, and technical constraints.
  • Experience managing and developing designers, including coaching, mentoring, performance management, and fostering a high-performing team culture.
  • Demonstrable experience implementing UX strategies that have improved customer experience, engagement, or commercial performance.
  • Experience working closely with CRO, IT, Marketing, and Digital teams to optimise customer journeys and improve key performance metrics.
  • Strong track record of using customer research, usability testing, analytics, and experimentation to drive continuous improvement.
  • Experience influencing stakeholders at all levels and building alignment across cross-functional teams.
  • Experience contributing to or shaping digital processes, governance frameworks, and ways of working within Agile environments.

Company, People & Relationships:

  • Promote assertive, warm, and professional relationships with colleagues across all teams and departments, communicating face-to-face where possible.
  • Build strong cross-functional relationships and maintain a good understanding of the wider business, including stores, Head Office functions, and key stakeholders.
  • Act as an ambassador for the UX function, promoting collaboration, customer-centric thinking, and best practice across the organisation.
  • Take responsibility for your own professional development and actively contribute to the development of UX capability within the wider team.
  • Work towards and achieve agreed objectives, supporting the delivery of team and business goals.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to meet the changing needs of the department and wider business.
  • Understand and comply with the Company's Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to wider Digital and business initiatives as required.

Same, But Different At schuh, owning your style is everything. We’ve got a fearless attitude and a love for bold choices that stand out. Because honestly, life is too short for boring shoes or boring anything. We celebrate every quirk, every “did they really pull that off?” moment, and every glorious clash of patterns that somehow just works. With over 100 footwear stores across the UK, we’re proud to create a space where you can stomp, strut, or shuffle into your own style with zero judgement and full applause. We’ve always championed self-expression, and we’re not about to stop now. Unapologetic? Always. Extra? Absolutely. And we’re using our platform to Do More Good by spotlighting the communities that shape us, pushing for progress, and making change happen (with great shoes on, obviously).
