POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, you will act as a trusted, business-facing advisor to NFI’s business units and functional leaders across Canada and the United States. You will support a broad mix of commercial, operational, litigation, and regulatory matters. This role is well-suited to a lawyer who brings strong legal judgment, commercial awareness, and the ability to provide practical advice in a complex, fast-moving business environment.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Provide practical, business-focused legal advice to NFI business units and functional leaders, helping the business navigate commercial, operational, compliance, governance, litigation, and risk matters.
  • Support leaders across the business with timely, practical, and commercially-grounded legal advice that informs operational and strategic decision-making.
  • Translate legal issues into clear options, recommendations, and risk-based guidance that enables the business to move forward while protecting the organization.
  • Draft, review, negotiate, and interpret a wide range of commercial agreements, including customer, supplier, service, procurement, confidentiality, and other business contracts.
  • Identify legal risks early and provide practical recommendations to support decision-making, risk mitigation, dispute prevention, and the management of disputes, claims and litigation.
  • Advise on regulations, compliance, risk prevention, and policy-related matters arising in a complex manufacturing, transportation, and cross-border operating environment.
  • Support governance matters, including the development, review, and implementation of corporate policies, practices, and business processes.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of legal processes, templates, tools, and practices that improve consistency, efficiency, and business partnership across the legal function.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESFUL

  • Law degree and current license to practice law in a Canadian or U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 3–5+ years of legal experience in corporate/commercial law, gained in a law firm, in-house legal department, or comparable legal environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess legal and business issues and provide practical guidance.
  • Clear and credible communication style, including the ability to translate legal concepts into practical advice for non-legal stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and initiative, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, competing deadlines, and sensitive matters in a collaborative team environment.
