As a community resource for thousands of families, Minnesota Children’s Museum is dedicated to providing children with a fun, hands-on and stimulating environment to explore and discover.

The Security Guard is responsible for assuring Minnesota Children’s Museum provides a safe and secure environment for all guests and staff while delivering excellent customer service to guests in the galleries and public spaces.

Security Guards at the museum do not possess weapons of any kind and are trained and expected to utilize de-escalation skills when navigating potentially unsafe scenarios, including interacting with individuals who may be under the influence or experiencing mental illness.

As a Security guard, you will be part of the Visitor Services frontline team and will be cross trained to understand other roles and responsibilities to provide support. This is an environment with children; guards must be able to redirect children using different tactics. You will be instilled with a sense of purpose, responsibility and teamwork as you will be part of executing our mission.

PAY: $16.75/hour

LOOKING TO HIRE: 1

SCHEDULE: Our Security Guards can take control of their schedules provided they meet a few requirements:

  • Available to work Mondays and at least every other Friday evening and Saturday & Sunday (shifts scheduled between 6:30AM-9:30PM).
  • In addition to Friday, some evening shifts for events throughout the month will be required. NOTE: These events would go beyond 9:30PM.
  • Available to work on federal holidays when the museum is open to the public.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

The Security Guard is responsible for a variety of safety-related objectives but is still expected to always provide customer service by working with Visitor Services staff to assist visitors in public areas. The following are just an example of some common day-to-day tasks:

  • Greet, check in and direct guests. Coordinate with staff members as needed for guests.
  • Answer general questions and provide directions.
  • Help to manage crowd control and capacity in galleries and building.
  • Oversee Lost and Found.
  • Use radio to communicate with frontline staff.
  • Monitor all building activities both interior and exterior with the help of the electronic security system.
  • Monitor and control access at building entrances.
  • Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Team.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Ability to interact effectively and positively with Museum patrons, staff and the public in a professional, effective, and tactful manner.
  • Maintaining a high level of situational awareness and utilizing deescalation skills when appropriate.
  • Ability to manage unpredictability especially regarding non-visitor interactions.
  • Ability to calmly and effectively handle emergency situations.
  • Must be focused and engaged even during quiet times, especially when sitting at the front desk.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team to make sound customer service decisions in complex situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • One year of customer service experience, preferably in high stress environments.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Computer experience required.
  • Experience working or volunteering with children in an educational or recreational setting.
  • Ability to complete basic First Aid training (provided by the Museum).

AVAILABLE BENEFITS

  • COMMUTER BENEFIT: The Visitor Assistant is eligible for a $40 per month stipend to support expenses in commuting to the museum. The benefit is added to the employee's second paycheck of each month.
  • WEEKEND BONUS: After working the first 2 weekend shifts in the 2-week pay period, you will be eligible for a $5 bonus to your hourly rate for your 3rd and 4th weekend shifts. This will be explained further if you are selected for an interview.
  • PAY INCREASES: Employees receive a 0.40 cent pay increase after 6 months of active employment and another 0.40 cent pay increase after 12 months. Additional pay increases will take effect annually following one year of employment and align with the hire date.
  • BONUS: You will be eligible for a Service Award Bonus at your 14-month mark. The bonus is 5% of your gross earnings in the first 14 months of employment.
