About the Position

Does your career need a breath of fresh air? Come join our team of inspectors with the Air Quality Department, where you will assist the Air Quality Department in providing clean air for the residents of Maricopa. The Air Quality Inspector is a field-based regulatory compliance position responsible for inspecting various sources from construction sites to industrial and commercial operations to determine compliance with air quality laws, rules, regulations, and permit conditions. This role involves traveling to complaint and inspection sites to observe operations, review records, document findings, and communicate with facility representatives to ensure compliance with applicable legal and permit requirements.

We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, or a related field, with at least 30 semester hours of coursework in natural, physical, or environmental applied sciences

Other Requirements  

  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire 

  • Must be certified as a Visible Emissions Evaluator by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality within six months of hire

Job Contributions

  • Inspects and investigates dust sources, industrial, and commercial air pollution sources, and related control equipment in the field to determine compliance with air quality rules, regulations, and permit conditions

  • Prepares detailed inspection reports and enforcement case documentation in accordance with department procedures. Accurately enters and maintains inspection, complaint, and enforcement data in the department’s database system to ensure data integrity and accessibility

  • Investigates citizen complaints regarding potential air quality violations within required timelines. Conducts field observations, documents findings clearly, determines compliance status, and takes appropriate action to ensure issues are properly addressed and resolved

  • Reviews facility records, monitoring data, test results, compliance verifications, and other documentation to verify compliance. Evaluates the accuracy and consistency of self-reported information against inspection findings and regulatory requirements

  • Advises and educates the public and industry about environmental air quality issues, regulations, policies, safety, and compliance

  • Reviews and comments on proposed permit conditions for applicability and enforceability.  Reviews and comments on standard operating procedures, help sheets, templates, and other materials as requested

Working Conditions

  • Work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties & responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations

  • This position is subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation

  • Subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel

  • May be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration

  • Some inspections/observations/complaints require working occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays. Work outdoors during periods of high temperatures, including days when temperatures exceed 110°

  • Hybrid and alternative work schedule options may be available after six months based on business needs
