As a part of the Hansen’s IGA Market team, the Deli/Bakery Associate is responsible for delivering “best in class” customer service to all guests at the Deli/Bakery counter and on the sales floor. The responsibilities of the Deli/Bakery Associate are to weigh, package, and price items bakery products as well as products from the deli cold case and slice meats and cheeses using the deli slicer. The Deli/Bakery Associate may also prepare the daily salad bar, various deli salads, dip selections based on pre-established recipes. The Deli/Bakery Associate will also assist in miscellaneous duties, such as, but not limited to, filling the deli and bakery case and salad bar when it gets low, maintaining the back coolers and cleaning.
Duties & Responsibilities
Serve customers in the Deli/Bakery Department while modeling Hansen’s IGA Market culture and providing “best in class” customer service, which includes, greeting, engaging, delighting and thanking every guest for their business
Slicing meats and cheeses using the deli slicer
Weigh, package, price and label Deli and Bakery items
Assist customers with answering questions and making recommendations
Take and fulfill customer orders via phone and in person
Prepare salad bar items, various deli salads, pizzas, sandwiches/wraps, and dips according to the daily production schedule
Assist with maintaining the back cooler including rotating stock, dating and cleaning
Assist Deli/Bakery Department with stocking, rotating and facing the Deli/Bakery department
Assist Deli Cook with minimal food preparation
Maintain sanitation and temperature logs as needed
Operate, maintain and clean deli equipment including knives, ovens, fryers, dishwashers, coolers and slicers
Assist with the training and mentoring of new associates in the Deli/Bakery Department
Maintain a clean and safe work environment by adhering to safety/sanitation regulations and procedures
Assist with all other Deli/Bakery Department duties as needed
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age due to required operation of Deli/Bakery equipment
Eagerness to interact with customers
Strong sense of team – ability to anticipate the needs of the team
Ability to work at a fast pace and efficient manner
Ability to take initiative and make decisions independently regarding department needs and priorities, under general supervision
Excellent time management, prioritization and organization skills
Ability to stand, walk, lift, bend, push/pull for extended periods of time
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Work primarily takes place in the deli and backroom areas, including coolers and freezers.
Regular exposure to varying temperatures and equipment.

With the $5,000 they made from selling their home plus a $5,000 loan from his brother, John, they bought two stores in Bangor. One of the stores was sold. The other store was a 1,500 square foot Smith’s Grocery Store that was developed into the first Hansen’s IGA. This began Hansen’s IGA’s history. Today the company is managed by Leo and Rosemary’s sons Nick and Greg Hansen, and Greg’s wife Kari Hansen. Greg and Kari have been involved in various aspects of the business for over 25 years and Nick has been with the business for over 10 years. Over the last 50 years, Hansen’s IGA has expanded to include 14 grocery stores located in friendly hometowns throughout Western Wisconsin, with the furthest outlying store located up north in Washburn. Our team members have grown to over 750 strong. We have seen success not only in this growth, but also in business operations and cultural development. Hansen’s IGA is known for our excellent homemade brats from our smokehouse, double smoked hams for the holidays, and an excellent meat selection. Our smokehouse in Bangor has consistently won awards over the last 20 years. Hansen’s IGA was awarded the 2019 IGA Innovation Award for our smokehouse operation, which only 17 IGA retailers throughout the World have the honor of receiving. Our holiday double smoked hams are a signature item which brings in customers from all over the state during the holiday seasons. Our Meat Department has good old-fashioned Meat Cutters to ensure that our meat selection is of the highest quality for our customers.
