Fisk University, a distinguished and historic institution, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of History within the Department of History and Political Science. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic scholar and dedicated teacher whose work complements the department’s existing strengths while expanding its curricular offerings and interdisciplinary engagement.

We seek a colleague who will contribute to the intellectual vitality of the University through excellence in teaching, scholarship, mentorship, and service. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to innovative pedagogy, culturally responsive teaching practices, and student-centered learning in a historically Black university environment.

Field of Specialization

We welcome applications from candidates specializing in, but not limited to:

American History

African American History

African History

Latin American and Caribbean History

Applicants whose research and teaching engage questions of race, diaspora, social justice, public history, digital humanities, or transnational and comparative perspectives are especially encouraged to apply, as are those who bring interdisciplinary or innovative methodological approaches.

Specifically, the Assistant Professor Will

Teach

Teach undergraduate courses in History and within the University’s core curriculum.

Develop and implement innovative curricula that reflect current trends and pedagogical best practices.

Utilize digital tools and technology-enhanced learning methodologies to support student success.

Demonstrate excellence in communication and interpersonal engagement with students and colleagues.

Advise and mentor undergraduate students pursuing careers and graduate studies in history and related fields.

Maintain a standard teaching load of 12 credit hours per semester, typically equivalent to four 3-credit courses per semester, with opportunities for course development related to the candidate’s expertise.

Continue an Active Research Agenda

Maintain an active program of scholarly research and publication.

Engage in professional activities including conference presentations, publications, and collaborative scholarly initiatives.

Foster student research, critical inquiry, and professional development.

Promote interdisciplinary connections and collaborations across the University.

Contribute to the intellectual and cultural life of the campus community.

Serve

Serve on departmental and university-wide committees.

Participate in program development, student recruitment, and retention initiatives.

Engage in community outreach and partnerships consistent with the mission of Fisk University.

Contribute to the University’s shared governance through committee participation and collaborative service.

Collaborate with tandem units on campus, including the W. E. B. Du Bois Honors Program, the John R. Lewis Center for Social Justice, the Office of Career Planning and Development, the Office of Global Affairs, and related programs and initiatives.

Integrate Technology

Demonstrate proficiency in instructional technology and digital learning platforms.

Utilize data-informed approaches to enhance student learning and assessment.

Stay current with emerging technologies and methodologies in historical research and pedagogy.

QualificationsRequired Qualifications

Ph.D. in History or a closely related field by the time of appointment.

Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Evidence of scholarly promise, including publications, works-in-progress, conference presentations, or a strong dissertation project.

Commitment to culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices.

Ability to contribute to a diverse and intellectually vibrant academic community.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills.

Commitment to mentoring and supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds.

Experience with online, hybrid, or technology-enhanced instruction is preferred.

Strong commitment to the mission and values of Fisk University.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity with the mission and culture of HBCUs.

Interdisciplinary teaching and research experience.

Active participation in professional organizations.

Experience in community-engaged scholarship or public history initiatives.
