About Figure Skating in Harlem

Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) is an award-winning youth development organization that transforms girls' lives through education, leadership development, and the power of figure skating. Since 1997, FSH has helped girls grow in confidence, academic achievement, resilience, and leadership while providing access to a sport they might not otherwise experience. We believe skating is not the destination—it is the vehicle through which girls develop the skills, character, and confidence to thrive in school, college, careers, and life.

Position Summary

In this part-time position (30 hours per week), the Skating Program Manager – Champs & Leaders (Ages 11–17) provides leadership for the skating program serving FSH's middle and high school students (ages 11–17). This role combines instructional excellence with people leadership—building and developing an outstanding coaching team while ensuring every student experiences a safe, joyful, and challenging environment. Success is measured not only by skating progress, but by the confidence, perseverance, teamwork, and leadership students develop through skating. The Manager reports to the Head of Skating Operations and works closely with the Creative Ice Show Director, Education Team, and Off-Ice Conditioning staff to deliver an exceptional, mission-driven program.

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership

  • Lead all skating instruction for the assigned age group.
  • Maintain high standards for safety, instruction, and student experience.
  • Monitor student progress and instructional quality; recommend advancement opportunities.

Coach Leadership

  • Recruit, hire, onboard, train, supervise, mentor, and evaluate coaches.
  • Observe instruction regularly and provide meaningful coaching and accountability.
  • Foster a collaborative culture where coaches are teachers, mentors, and role models.

Student Development

  • Prepare students for Learn to Skate USA and U.S. Figure Skating testing.
  • Collaborate with Education and Off-Ice Conditioning staff to support each student's overall growth.
  • Encourage older students to develop leadership, accountability, and mentorship skills while continuing to strengthen their skating.

Ice Shows & Performances

  • Partner with the Head of Skating Operations and Creative Ice Show Director to prepare students for the annual Ice Show and performances.
  • Teach and reinforce choreography while ensuring students are prepared to perform with confidence.

Family Engagement

  • Serve as the primary skating liaison for families.
  • Communicate expectations, progress, and opportunities in a timely, welcoming manner.

Equipment & Operations

  • Fit students for skates and oversee skate inventory.
  • Support operational excellence by maintaining organized equipment and skating spaces.

What Success Looks Like

  • Students make measurable progress in skating skills and confidence.
  • Coaches deliver consistent, high-quality instruction and continue to grow professionally.
  • Families feel informed, welcomed, and connected to the program.
  • Students are prepared for testing, performances, and the annual Ice Show.
  • The program operates safely, efficiently, and reflects Figure Skating in Harlem's values.
  • Strong partnerships exist across skating, education, and operations.

Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of figure skating coaching experience.
  • Knowledge of Learn to Skate USA and U.S. Figure Skating curriculum and testing.
  • Experience leading, supervising, and developing coaches.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to youth development and inclusive practices.
