JOB TITLE:             LAW CLERK V
DEPARTMENT:      LEGAL RESEARCH DEPARTMENT
LOCATION:            69 WEST WASHINGTON STREET
                                   CHICAGO, ILLINOIS  60602
GRADE:                   21
SALARY:                 $89,698

JOB SUMMARY AND DUTIES:
 
  • Assist judges in resolving maters before the court and in courtroom proceedings
  • Advise Chief Judge and department heads on legal and policy matters involving the court
  • Research and analyze legal issues presented
  • Prepare written memoranda, summaries, and presentations based on legal research and analysis
  • Assist in drafting, editing, and preparing opinions, orders, notices, and decisions
  • Consult with judges regarding interpretation and application of law
  • Track and report on pending legislation impacting the court and its operations.
  • Respond to litigant concerns and inquiries regarding court-related legal matters.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel on litigation involving the court, including case management, document review, and communications.
  • Review, analyze, and prepare responses to subpoenas and other legal process directed to the court or its departments.
  • Perform basic administrative tasks in connection with job duties and/or at the direction of supervisor
  • Assist with other miscellaneous matters as directed by the Chief Judge or Director of Legal Research

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • Bachelor’s and Juris Doctor degrees
  • License to practice law in Illinois
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in the legal profession
  • Knowledge of and skill in various legal research methods
  • Ability to use standard word processing, spreadsheet and database applications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and legal research abilities
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work and get along with others and perform as part of a team
  • Ability to multitask and perform under pressure

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • On a continuous basis, sit at a desk for long periods of time in front of a computer screen
  • Intermittently twist to reach equipment or supplies
  • Perform simple grasping and fine manipulation
  • Possess the strength to lift up to 20 pounds
  • Use conventional office equipment such as telephone, computer, and copy/fax machine
