Head Groundsman – Job Description

Role purpose:
Responsible for the management, maintenance, and presentation of all grounds and playing surfaces to the highest standards. Leads the grounds team, plans maintenance schedules, and ensures safe, consistent, high-quality playing conditions.

Key responsibilities:

1. Manage and maintain sports turf, lawns, gardens, and surrounding grounds
2. Plan and carry out seasonal maintenance programmes
3. Supervise, train, and organise grounds staff
4. Set mowing schedules and standards
5. Manage turf nutrition, irrigation, aeration, scarification, topdressing, and renovation work
6. Identify and control weeds, pests, diseases, and turf issues
7. Maintain machinery, equipment, and workshop standards
8. Keep accurate records of chemical applications, fertiliser use, and maintenance operations
9. Manage contractors and specialist works when required
10. Monitor weather conditions and adjust maintenance plans
11. Ensure compliance with health & safety regulations
12. Prepare surfaces for matches/events/competitions
13. Provide cover during matches
14. Maintain stock levels, and purchasing
15. Report to Club management/owners and committees

Skills and experience:

1. Good knowledge of turf management and horticulture
2. Experience operating and maintaining grounds machinery
3. Knowledge of fertilisers, pesticides, irrigation, and soil management
4. Ability to lead a team and work independently
5. Good organisational and problem-solving skills
6. Relevant qualifications (e.g. turf management, horticulture, spraying certification) desirable

4. Good communication skills
5. Ability to work outdoors in all conditions
6. Past pitch experience but essential but desirable.
