Software Engineer | Frontend Engineer
Full stack software engineer who continually picks up new skills to bring ideas to life. Excels in problem-solving, systems design, and project management.
In previous lives, I worked as an economist at a fintech startup from its seed-funding-and-folding-chair days all the way through to maturity. I wanted to influence policymaking through economic research but was disappointed with the short reach of economic literature. Realizing the importance of spreading knowledge, I leaped into the mass communications industry as a designer/animator and video editor/producer.
I rediscovered software engineering as a UI/UX designer for PlayStation VR, designing the next-gen VR menu system. It wasn't enough for me to mock it up through pretty sketches and animations, I wanted to make them actually work too! Thankfully, I had some coding experience from my Web 1.0 days and my on-and-off flirtations with Python and Raspberry Pi throughout my life. I was able to read through docs and quickly learn enough C# to make interactive prototypes of my UX designs, delighting our executives from Japan.
After that eye-opening experience, I went back to school to understand programming theory and practice, learn JavaScript, and expand my skill set with Ruby on Rails, React, Redux, Sinatra, various frontend libraries, as well as learning how to build backend services powering RESTful APIs.
Since I've retooled, I'm no longer wandering haphazardly through codebases but can now bend the code to my will while continuing to learn new skills on the job, such as NodeJS, AWS, Vue, TypeScript, GraphQL, CI/CD, and serverless, event-driven architecture, and ongoing iterations of ECMAScript. W00t!
