Kyuran Kang

As a Master's student in Computer Science at Columbia University, I am passionate about applying machine learning and natural language processing techniques to solve real-world problems. I am currently a Graduate Research Assistant at the Columbia Speech Lab, where I am conducting research on the development of a multimodal transformer model for cross-cultural emotion detection. This project aims to integrate text, speech, and visual algorithms to identify emotions in English, Mandarin, and Spanish conversations. I am collaborating with a team of PhD and MS students, and have contributed to the data collection, preprocessing, and modeling stages of the research. Previously, I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for two courses at Columbia: Deep Learning for NLP and Visual Interfaces to Computers. In these roles, I managed the assessment and feedback of assignments and exams, facilitated office hours to advise students on various NLP and computer vision techniques and models, and participated in staff meetings to discuss and develop course matters. Before joining Columbia, I obtained my Bachelor's degree from Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea, where I double majored in Chemical Engineering and Applied Artificial Intelligence. I also gained research and teaching experience as an intern and a mentor at several labs and organizations, where I worked on topics such as data analysis, process optimization, and AI education. My goal is to become an expert in the field of AI, and to use my skills and knowledge to create positive social impact. I am proficient in Python, PyTorch, and other tools and frameworks for ML and NLP. I also hold a certification in Data Science/Engineering Expert Program from Multicampus. I am eager to learn new things, collaborate with diverse teams, and challenge myself with novel and complex problems.
