About this role
Backend Engineer
Reports to: Head of Engineering / CTO
About Superagent AI
Superagent AI is building the AI-native distribution layer for insurance — a $7T industry still run on manual workflows and legacy software. We're an early-stage, fast-moving team reimagining how insurance is sold, serviced, and supported, with AI at the core. Backed by top-tier VCs, we're an international team of exited founders, builders, and technologists. Already trusted by 100+ agencies, we're building the next version of the platform fast and running it reliably as we scale — a real-time voice platform, an agent/skills layer, omnichannel messaging, and deep insurance-system integrations.
What you'll do
- Build and ship features across our backend platform: the campaign/workflow engine, integrations layer, and core APIs.
- Work directly in our multi-tenant PostgreSQL data model - schema design, migrations, query performance.
- Design and implement event-driven and queue-based workflows using Temporal (our workflow engine).
- Own features end-to-end: design, build, test, deploy, and support in production.
- Ship daily using Claude Code / Codex as a core part of how you work - we're an AI-native engineering org.
- Partner closely with the Head of Engineering and the rest of the team on architecture and code review.
About you (must-haves)
- High ownership and hands-on experience - you take a feature from design to production and support it after ship.
- Strong in TypeScript/Node - comfortable building and maintaining production APIs and services.
- Experience with PostgreSQL and relational data modeling at production scale.
- Comfortable with distributed/event-driven systems (queues, workflow engines, idempotency).
- You use Claude Code / Codex or similar AI coding tools daily and are comfortable orchestrating coding agents as part of your workflow.
- Clear communicator, comfortable working async on a distributed team.
Bonus
- Experience with NestJS, Temporal, or another workflow orchestration engine.
- AWS experience (RDS, ECS/EKS, Terraform).
- Experience with LLM/agent systems in production (Anthropic, OpenAI, prompt/agent orchestration, evals).
- Insurance, fintech, or another regulated/compliance-heavy vertical.
Our stack

How we work
Fast-moving distributed team with an AI-native engineering culture. We're closer to our customers than most competitors - that's our edge, and it drives how we prioritize. We ship things that work for real agencies, not demos.
