Software Engineer, Applied AI
About this role
This role is for an early- to mid-career software engineer building applied AI systems at the application layer, shipping agent-powered features, full-stack apps, and durable workflows that power Inference Capital’s work. You’ll take meaningful ownership of production systems that turn improving model capabilities into dependable, economically valuable tools while helping shape a small, ambitious engineering culture.
What you'll do
- Build production systems across agent systems, full-stack applications, durable workflows, and data infrastructure.
- Own system design, deployment, and iteration for agent-powered features end to end.
- Test new models, frameworks, tool-use patterns, and context approaches and productionize improvements.
- Build evaluations, observability, and human-review systems to make agent behavior measurable and reliable.
- Develop durable workflows and data infrastructure for tool coordination, context, state, retries, and failure recovery.
- Design and implement interfaces that make complex agent workflows clear, fast, and intuitive.
- Turn rapidly improving model capabilities into dependable production systems that perform economically valuable work.
- Lead substantial projects across product, agents, data, and infrastructure and receive direct user feedback.
- Help shape the technical foundation and engineering culture of a small team.
What Inference Capital is looking for
- A few years of software engineering experience with strong fundamentals and a track record of shipping production systems.
- Experience building full-stack applications and owning features end to end.
- Hands-on experience with LLM applications, agents, tool use, evaluations, or other applied AI systems.
- High agency, strong product judgment, and comfort moving across product, backend, data, and infrastructure.
- Genuine curiosity about agent developments and the judgment to separate useful advances from hype.
- Care for reliability, craft, and product detail, and comfort operating in a small team with broad problems and incomplete specs.
- Based in San Francisco or willing to relocate and excited to work with the team in person.
- Relevant experience such as fintech/financial data, early-stage startups, durable workflow orchestration, human-in-the-loop systems, or handling sensitive/permissioned data.
