Your role at St John of God Midland Private Hospital

We are seeking experienced and passionate Chefs to join the team at St John of God Midland Private Hospital, opening in August. As a senior member of the catering team, the Chef plays a pivotal role in preparing and presenting high-quality, nutritious meals for patients and caregivers, ensuring an exceptional standard of service at all times. This position requires a strong commitment to delivering meals that meet Australian Dietary Standards, while supporting patient wellbeing and recovery through thoughtful menu planning and execution.

The successful candidate will operate in strict compliance with the Health Department of Western Australia (HDWA) regulations and the Hospital Food Safety Management Plan, maintaining the highest levels of hygiene, safety, and quality. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to a new healthcare facility focused on excellence in patient care and hospitality.

The Position

  • Proficient in all aspects of hospital cooking including cyclic menus, A La Carte and bulk cooking, vegetarian dishes, special diets and function catering.
  • Prepare and cook meals as directed by the Manager.
  • Direct catering caregivers as required in meal preparation.
  • Ensure a high level of service quality, timeliness, quantity, presentation and portioning of meals to all outlets is maintained. 
  • Assist the Manager with establishing systems and procedures for waste minimisation, including recycling and co-mingling.
  • Competent in the operation of all catering equipment and able to demonstrate operational procedures of kitchen equipment.
  • Support caregiver training to enhance food presentation, meal service and quality.
  • Cater for internal and external functions as requested.
  • Ensure Australian Standards, Codes of Practice, Legislative requirements and the Hospital Food Safety Plan (Good Manufacturing Practices GMP) are met in providing a high standard of meal services to patients and other customers.
  • Participate as senior member of the catering team, promoting a supportive and team-orientated environment.
  • Act as a role model in following safe food handling techniques in accordance with current legislation. 
  • Assist with the implementation and review of cleaning routines ensuring compliance with HDWA and Infection Control guidelines.
  • Ensure all relevant food safety documentation is completed in accordance with guidelines and procedures. 
  • Promote safe work practices and report on equipment improvements, hazards, risks or repairs in accordance with procedures.
  • Participate in Departmental Quality Activities and other work-related meeting groups.
  • Attend training sessions offered by the Hospital.  Recognise the necessity to continually develop skills and acquire additional knowledge appropriate to the position.

The ideal candidates will hold a Certificate IV in Commercial Cookery (or equivalent Chef trade qualification) and possess a strong understanding of safe food handling practices, including HACCP principles and food safety standards. Applicants should demonstrate proven experience working within a cooking or catering environment in a reputable hospitality or healthcare setting, with the ability to consistently deliver high-quality outcomes.

Well-developed communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential, alongside a demonstrated capacity to lead, support, and motivate team members. The successful applicants will have sound knowledge and practical expertise in food production systems, including cook chill and cook fresh methods, and a solid understanding of dietary requirements, including standard, modified, allergy-specific diets and thickened fluids, to ensure safe and appropriate meal preparation for all patients.

  • Salary: $71,568 to $73,344 pro rata, plus 12% superannuation
  • Casual Rate: $45.12 - $46.24 per hour, plus 12% superannuation
  • Permanent part time and casual positions available
