We partner with the world's leading labs to design high-signal datasets and run rigorous evaluations that go beyond static benchmarks. We're a small, early team (post–Series A) where individual contributors have direct impact on how the next generation of models learns and improves.

About the Role

What this role is: As part of AfterQuery's engineering team, you will have end-to-end ownership over projects that push the frontier of AI evaluation. You will work on a mix of research engineering, designing novel RL environments, agentic systems, and evaluation harnesses, and platform engineering, building human-in-the-loop platforms, scaling data infrastructure, and designing annotator workflows.

Why this role exists: AfterQuery is scaling rapidly to meet the demands of frontier AI labs. This is not a narrow role. One week you might prototype a new RL environment from a research paper, the next you will be deploying distributed experiments on Kubernetes, and the week after you will be improving the reliability of Next.js dashboards or building a Kafka pipeline for annotator analytics.

What makes it interesting: You will work directly with frontier labs and see model capabilities months before the market. You will have an outsized impact on shaping core systems from day one at a company with hockey-stick growth and a team that operates like the best quant shops and early-stage startups combined.

What You'll Own

Design and build scalable systems, including RL environments, APIs, and human-in-the-loop platforms

Collaborate across research, product, and design to ship features quickly without sacrificing quality

Write clean, maintainable code and contribute to documentation

Participate in code reviews and design discussions

Solve real-world scalability and reliability challenges

Contribute to the core infrastructure powering data and evaluation for the world's leading AI labs

Requirements

Must-Have

Technical

Strong coding fundamentals in Node.js and TypeScript, Python, and/or Go

Deep understanding of distributed systems, scalability challenges, and system design

Familiarity with cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS, Kubernetes, APIs, and NoSQL databases

Ability to reason about trade-offs and balance speed versus reliability under pressure

Active GitHub with real projects demonstrating you are a builder at heart

Execution and Ownership

Works autonomously and collaboratively without burning out under heavy load

Proactive, identifies problems and drives solutions without being told to

High-output and high-accountability mindset, can work banker hours when needed

Strong bias toward delivering simple solutions to complex problems

Communication

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Can clearly and compellingly articulate why they want to join a startup and work in AI now

Nice-to-Have

Experience with RL environments, agentic systems, or human-in-the-loop workflows

Background at a top-tier quant firm or as a founding engineer at a high-growth startup

Multiple internships at strong startups with demonstrated progression and strong references

Ex-founder with a technically sophisticated and complex product

Has trialed or succeeded in past fast-paced startup roles with strong references
