Neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus: modulation of stem cell fate by experience. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis has been implicated in cognitive and emotional processes, and the response to antidepressant treatment. However, little is known about how adult-born cellular populations contribute to the structure and function of the hippocampus. An indelible lineage analysis was performed. Adult hippocampal stem cells can produce expanding and persisting populations of not only neurons, but also stem cells. Furthermore, the stem cell-neuron relationship depends on the experience of the animal or the location of the stem cell. The results suggest that the relationship between stem cells and their neuronal progeny is not cell-autonomous, but is under control of the niche. In the hippocampus, fate specification may act as a form of cellular plasticity for adapting to environmental changes.
