Backend Engineer, Foundations
About this role
What we're looking for
We need a backend engineer with 3+ years of experience building production backend systems who can own the graph infrastructure and data pipelines at the core of Equall's platform. You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced, seed-stage environment (expect 70-80 hour weeks, 5 days in office) and have a strong perspective on data, databases, and system design. Bonus points if you have experience with graph databases like Neo4j, SRE/infrastructure work, or cloud-native multi-cloud environments.
What you'll do
Design, build, and scale the knowledge graph infrastructure and data pipelines that turn unstructured legal documents into structured, queryable legal ground truth
Architect and implement public-facing APIs that internal services, agentic systems, and customers rely on
Build DAG-based processing workflows on Prefect for extracting, transforming, and reconciling legal data from source documents
Scale the platform to handle rapidly growing data volumes — processing thousands of documents per data room with 5-10x growth expected in the coming months
Operate and maintain services on Kubernetes — deployment, observability, and performance tuning
Partner with AI researchers and engineers to integrate agentic systems into production workflows
Help establish strong engineering foundations and standards as the backend team scales, ensuring systems remain available, durable, and secure for enterprise law firm customers with strict tenant isolation requirements
Shape the data layer architecture — scaling reads and writes on the graph, managing Postgres and Redis for application data and caching
