About

I am a data engineer who is passionate about delivering data products that provide data in a standard, consistent, and reliable manner by employing unit and integration testing along with data profiling and alerting tools. With a PhD in chemical physics, years of research and programming experience, and a passion for learning, I enjoy combining data from diverse sources and ideas from different disciplines to uncover hidden value in data. I have several years experience coding in Python using common data science and engineering packages (pandas, sqlalchemy, numpy, scipy, matplotlib, sci-kit learn, etc.) In addition, from my experience on a team of volunteer community college instructors in San Quentin State Prison and at a interdisciplinary biotech startup environment, I learned communication, teamwork, and flexibility in a constantly evolving environment. Check out my blog at https://aawiegel.github.io to see descriptions of some of the projects I have worked on. Poochr, an image and text-based dog breed recommender. Similarity with final layer of dog breed CNN image classifier and word embeddings for dog characteristics used to find closest dog breed to a user provided image and text description. Robocicerone, a computerized hipster to recommend beer based on your taste and favorite styles. Set up several AWS instances to web-scrape 6 million of user-rating pairs along with reviews and descriptions of beer and stored them in mongodb. Content-based and collaborative filtering recommendation systems were developed from this data, which included NLP/Topic modeling to extract beer characteristics/style information. Gathering data from the Department of Education API from 2013 into a PostgreSQL database to predict which 7,200 post-secondary education institutions closed or lost their accreditation by 2017. With this information, students can make informed decisions about the risks in choosing a college or university.
