Job Title: Care Attendant

Job Summary

Care Attendants provide direct care and assistance to participants who have a diagnosis of age-related dementia.  The Aide facilitates participants’ engagement in a broad range of activities  in a community setting. They are responsible for supporting participants with their physical, social, emotional, and recreational needs throughout the program day. 

Essential Functions

• Personal Care: Assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as toileting, bathing, dressing, grooming, transfers, and ambulation. 
• Medication Assistance: Providing medication reminders or assistance with self-administration.
• Activities and Social Engagement: Assisting in social and recreational activities, facilitating group discussions, providing individual and group activities according to the participant's needs and interests, and encouraging participation in therapeutic programs such as art, exercise, music, and cognitive activities.
• Meal Service and Nutrition: Assisting with meal and snack service, checking food temperatures, assisting with feeding or assisted dining.
• Environmental Maintenance: Maintaining a clean and safe environment, including activity areas, bathrooms, and equipment, and reporting any hazards.
• Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining accurate records of services delivered, reporting changes in participant condition to supervisors, and completing incident reports when necessary.
• Communication: Communicating effectively with participants, their families, guardians, and/or caregivers, and other program staff under the guidance of supervisors.
• Team Collaboration: Working collaboratively with other program staff, including the Executive Director, Program Director, other Care Attendants, and Volunteers to ensure the well-being of participants and coordinate care and activities.
• Compliance: Following all OSHA safety guidelines and Title 22 policies and procedures, maintaining confidentiality of participant information, and adhering to relevant regulations.
• Advocacy: Acting as a participant advocate by reporting any violations of participant rights and responding to complaints in a timely and appropriate manner. 

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Provide direct supervision to volunteers. 
• Foster a culture of respect, safety, and professional growth. 

Work Environment

• This position involves working in a dynamic and emotionally sensitive environment.

Physical Demands

• Sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, and reach. 
• Safely lift up to 50 pounds and carry up to 20 pounds. 
• Operate standard office equipment, including computer, printer, and telephone. 
• Physical requirements include assisting with participants’ mobility as needed, and remaining on feet for extended periods during activities.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required; additional coursework or certification in gerontology, nursing assistance, or related field.
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Home Health Aide (HHA), or similar certification strongly preferred but not required.
• Minimum of 1–2 years of direct care experience working with older adults, individuals with dementia, or in a community-based care program preferred but not required.

• Observation and Reporting – Skilled at observing participant behavior, identifying changes in condition, and accurately documenting and reporting concerns.
• Activity Facilitation – Ability to lead or assist with group and individual activities that promote socialization, physical movement, and cognitive engagement.
• Time Management and Organization – Ability to manage multiple tasks while prioritizing participant safety and care needs.
• Adaptability and Problem-Solving – Flexible and able to respond calmly and effectively to changing participant needs or unexpected situations.
• Knowledge of Safety and Care Standards – Understanding of infection control, OSHA safety guidelines, and confidentiality requirements.
• Physical Stamina – Ability to safely assist with transfers, mobility support, and other physically demanding caregiving tasks.
• Cultural Competency – Ability to respect and work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Certifications (Preferred but not Required)

• CPR and First Aid.

Additional Requirements

• Must pass a background check in accordance with California Department of Social Services.
• Valid California Driver’s License and insurability per company policy.
• Flexibility in schedule, including occasional evenings or weekends for outreach or events.
