JOB SUMMARY
Assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician and/or advanced practitioner, including preparing patients to be seen by the physician and/or advanced practitioner, and perform specific procedures with appropriate orientation and supervision. Assists with patient phone calls, prescription refills, referrals, and prior authorizations. Interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e. pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight and height) and records information in patients’ charts. May be required to collect blood samples, tissue or other laboratory specimens and prepare them for testing. Explains treatment procedures, medications, diets and physician’s instructions to patients. Prepares treatment rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean. Familiar with standard concepts, practices and procedures related to the practice. Follows standard procedures and/or written instructions to perform job duties. Assists with business operations, clerical, medical records management, reception, and patient scheduling as needed. Demonstrates teamwork to ensure achievement of team, individual, and corporate goals. Provides support to team members and performs other duties as required.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
Licensure: Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required from the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. Graduated from a Medical Assistant program, accredited by the Commission on accreditation of Allied Health Education Program preferred. Test and pass the National Certification exam (AAMA, NHA, NCCT, AMT, NAHP) to be certified as Medical Assistant required.
Experience: 1-2 years’ experience in a clinical setting is preferred.
Skills: Good oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with patients, physicians, advanced practitioners and staff members. Ability to interpret and follow oral and written instructions, policies, guidelines and standards. Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively. Intermediate Proficiency level with Microsoft Office: Word and Excel.
Physical, Mental, Environmental and Working Conditions
Works in outpatient clinic and acute health care setting with adult, pediatric, adolescents and geriatric patients with developmental delays, behavioral issues, and/or health related medical problems. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions. Requires exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
