What’s the Role?

Mechanical Engineers in the Projects and Automation Group design, develop, and maintain automated loading systems and related equipment for ZEISS machines. As key members of the Solutions Engineering Team, they collaborate closely with Automation and Electromechanical Engineers.

This role supports all phases of Automation Systems Development and Implementation, including modifications to standard systems and development of non-standard “turnkey” solutions. Responsibilities include concept development, system design, engineering deliverables, and onsite implementation and validation, covering cell communications, safety, part sensing, and material handling. Mechanical Engineers also engage with sales, quoting teams, and internal/external suppliers to ensure successful project delivery from design through commissioning, build, testing, and acceptance.

Sound Interesting?

Here’s what you’ll do:

  • Design and Development: Create 2D and 3D models and drawings of mechanical components and systems using CAD software such as SolidWorks or Creo.

  • Analysis and Simulation: Perform engineering analyses, including FEA and CFD, to ensure designs meet performance, safety, and reliability standards.

  • Prototyping and Testing: Develop and test prototypes, analyze results, and refine designs to correct flaws and optimize performance.

  • Project Ownership: Lead mechanical design and build activities from concept to completion, managing timelines, budgets, and coordination with internal teams and external vendors.

  • Time Tracking: Maintain accurate weekly records of time spent on project deliverables.

  • Manufacturing Support: Oversee manufacturing processes to ensure designs are executed accurately and cost-effectively.

  • Assembly and Build Support: Assist with assembly tasks using hand and power tools as needed.

  • Troubleshooting and Maintenance: Diagnose equipment failures and operational issues, recommending effective solutions.

  • Documentation and Reporting: Produce and maintain detailed technical documentation, including reports, specifications, SAP configuration, and assembly instructions.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams—including electrical engineers, manufacturing, and quality assurance—to meet project requirements.

  • Compliance: Ensure all designs and processes adhere to relevant industry and safety standards, such as OSHA and ANSI.

  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to ongoing improvement initiatives within the Solutions Engineering team.

Do you qualify?

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (ME preferred) or equivalent experience of 4 years.

  • CAD & Design Tools: Proficient with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, or AutoCAD.

  • Mechanical Knowledge: Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and materials science.

  • Engineering Analysis: Experience with FEA or other engineering analysis tools preferred.

  • Skills: Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills; effective written and verbal communication; strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.

  • Teamwork: Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.

  • Preferred Experience: Exposure to robotic systems (Fanuc, ABB, KUKA, UR) and knowledge of manufacturing quality/metrology systems is a plus.
