The Role: Smith-Blair, a Xylem Brand, seeks to hire a Material Handler to use powered or hand forklift(s) to transport various materials and parts to/from production areas.

Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:

  • Must be a team player that exhibits excellent communication/interpersonal skills; motivated to work in a highly participative environment and understand and believe in the Lean Manufacturing Principles (5’s, single piece flow, KanBan, etc.).
  • Will be required to complete forklift safety training course and earn passing grade on end of course exam; will also be required to demonstrate safe operating abilities through observation of hands-on operation.
  • From written or verbal instructions uses hand or powered fork lift to transport requested material or parts to proper production area(s).
  • Maintains power truck and other material handling equipment in a clean and safe operating condition.
  • Must be able to identify parts by part number as indicated on route sheet and as necessary be able to read and identify parts on shop prints.
  • Must be capable of using computer to clock/transfer shop orders.
  • Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Maintains quality and quantity standards.
  • Must be familiar with product terminology, production department layouts and machine locations so production delays are avoided.
  • As required, must stack and store parts and materials in a safe manner and help with inventory control.
  • Must perform any other duties assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Participation in Xylem Watermark volunteer activities.

Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED required.
  • Forklift operation experience required; will be required to obtain internal forklift operation certification.
  • Manufacturing/production experience desired but not required.

Physical Demands:

  • Moderate lifting (11-35 lbs.), moderate lifting/pushing (11-35 lbs.)
  • Regularly required to stand, reach, bend and move/walk throughout the facility
  • Regularly required to listen, talk to, and see co-workers and managers on a daily basis

Work Environment:

  • Large industrial facility
  • Manufacturing/production work areas and equipment related to: product assembly and assembly lines, metal forming and metal fabrication, welding/grinding, product finishing/painting, product transport/material handling, etc.
  • Standard weekly job hours: 40 hours
  • Overtime is not standard but can be frequent based on seasonal workload
