We’re hiring a Mule Packer Supervisor to Live. Work. Explore. at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon!

 

Job Summary:
Supervise the safe and efficient packing of mules by the packers; oversee the safe and healthful use of mules utilized in packing operation and coordinate inbound and outbound deliveries for Phantom Ranch.

 

The Details:
Position Type: Full-Time, Year-Round
Pay: $22.65 per hour

Housing: A private room in a shared apartment, $267/month, payroll-deducted
Schedule: May include weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the preparation and the delivery of groceries, duffels and other service items from the Rim to Phantom Ranch and other designated inner canyon locations.
  • Assists with the selection of new packers.
  • Provides continual training and evaluation of the pack staff and the stock used in the packing operation.
  • Works with Livery Management on conducting performance reviews of the staff.
  • Responsible for the condition of the pack barn, all packing equipment as well as oversight of repairs and replacement of equipment.
  • Responsible for the safe and healthy use of mules in packing operations, including health checks, and shoeing requirements.
  • Oversees watering, feeding, grooming, and health check of mules.
  • Conducts monthly safety talks for the Pack staff.
  • Ensures that assigned staff is adhering to all safety, risk management and environmental policies.
  • Overnight stays at Phantom Ranch may be required from time to time. Based on the mixed-gender nature of the staff and limited employee housing at Phantom Ranch, employees may be required to share room accommodations with team members of the opposite sex. Employees will have access to gender-specific shower and restroom facilities but they will be expected to sleep in a co-ed bunk house.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • One-year previous supervisory experience.
  • Two years previous experience with mule or horse pack operations.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills plus excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with two-way radio communications use.
  • Ability to identify and correct potential health and/or safety problems with mules.
  • Have own saddle and tack.
  • Ability to handle extremes in weather and working conditions and exposure to outdoor conditions.
  • Possess physical agility and ability to stay in the saddle for upwards of five hours or more without dismounting, and physical ability to handle lead line on the pack string.
  • Ability to supervise staff and provide detailed direction and supervision in area outside of traditional work setting.
