Job Description Summary:
The Postal Technician performs routine postal duties and complies with federal postal rules and regulations in the receipt, handling, and distribution of all classes of incoming and outgoing mail.
The position operates postal equipment, processes, sorts and delivers letters, packages, and parcels for delivery.
Reporting to the Student Mail Services Supervisor, the Postal Technician performs a variety of routine duties within established policies and procedures or by referral to the supervisor’s guidelines.
Specific responsibilities include (but not limited to):
Receives, sorts, and delivers incoming U.S. Postal Service and campus mail. Prepares and processes outgoing First Class, Priority, Standard A, parcels, and accountable U.S. mail according to U.S. Postal Service regulations. Receives and processes letters, packages, and parcels from mail delivery/courier companies, i.e. FedEx, UPS, DHL, etc.
Provide students and staff with the highest level of customer service, whether at the walk-up window, by telephone or email. Address customer concerns by resolving problems and answering questions in a professional and polite manner.
Operate mail metering, weighing, and electronic accounting equipment by ensuring the security of equipment in compliance with USPS regulations and department security requirements. Dispense and sell postage and postal money orders. Reconcile daily postage reports to the postage used.
Make deposit to U.S. Postal Service transferring cash to USPS registered mail at the local USPS branch location with minimal loss of funds. Complete U.S. Postal Service forms.
Job Description:
Required Qualifications
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s license and two years of driving experience.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to accurately sort by alpha-numeric schemes.
- Ability to operate electronic and mechanical devices.
- Ability to read and perform basic mathematical and recordkeeping tabulation tasks.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks, and to follow written and oral instructions.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Experience working in a postal environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of automated envelope, package handling or sorting systems.
- Data entry skills
- Familiarity with U.S. Postal Service regulations.
- Substantive experience working in a postal environment.
Conditions of Employment
- This position is non-exempt, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the fair labor standards act.
- This position is subject to overtime and schedule changes and may be required to work shifts during weekends, holidays, and special events.
- During the summer months work hours may be modified to reflect reduced mail volume. At the start of the fall and spring semesters work hours may be modified or extended to reflect increased mail volume
- This position has been designated as essential and will require reporting to work when the University is officially closed.
- All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year.
