About this role

A Traffic Control Maintainer is an integral member of the construction team responsible for directing and diverting traffic away from active work zones. The role focuses on establishing and maintaining a safe, well-organized work environment to protect both workers and the traveling public. Traffic Control Maintainers install and maintain traffic control devices such as barricades, signage, variable message boards, arrow boards, and safety barriers to guide motorists safely through or around construction areas. TCMs must remain continuously aware of ongoing construction activities and surrounding traffic conditions to ensure compliance with safety standards and effective traffic flow.

Responsibilities and Duties:


Included but not limited to the list below.

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements and Part 6 of the ATSSA Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Read and interpret maps, traffic control plans, and project specifications.
  • Conduct pre-job inspections and inventory required equipment.
  • Coordinate the initial layout and ensure traffic control devices, including replacement materials, are delivered to the job site prior to installation.
  • Install and remove traffic control devices such as barricades, signs, variable message boards, arrow boards, safety barriers, and detour signage (e.g., Road Work Ahead, End Road Work, Road Closed).
  • Direct traffic through work zones using hand signals, signs, and flagging techniques.
  • Retrieve all traffic control devices at the end of the workday as directed.
  • Maintain all equipment and devices in safe, proper working condition.
  • Load and secure required equipment into vehicles upon completion of work.
  • Observe, document, and report traffic violations or unsafe driver behavior to supervisors or law enforcement as appropriate.
  • Complete all required paperwork, receipts, and time sheets accurately and on or before designated deadlines.
  • Report unsafe conditions to a supervisor immediately.
  • Comply with all company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory standards.
  • Travel between job sites as projects progress.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred; vocational training strongly desired.
  • Education or work-related credentials from secondary or post-secondary programs (e.g., Precision Exams, NOCTE) preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Prior traffic control experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of trench shoring systems is a plus.
  • Current UDOT/ATSSA Traffic Control Technician (TCT) Certification required, or willingness to obtain certification.
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
  • Strong commitment to learning and professional development.
  • High level of personal responsibility and accountability.
  • Ability to work safely in close proximity to traffic, heavy equipment, and personnel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability and willingness to work extended hours, including day, night, weekend, and non-standard shifts as required.
  • Ability to walk, stand, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, balance, climb, and frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical labor.
  • Ability to load, secure, and unload trucks, trailers, and equipment independently.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and be exposed to noise, vibration, and job-site hazards.
  • Ability to interact professionally and effectively with the traveling public.
