What you'll do:

The Underwriting Manager will be responsible for the leadership and management of team of underwriters to achieve the Company’s production and quality goals. The ideal candidate must possess extensive Non-QM, conventional and jumbo lending experience with an in-depth knowledge of mortgage processes. Additional requirements are a high degree of proficiency with various mortgage technologies and a dynamic hands-on working style in a fast-paced environment. The candidate must have strong organizational skills and the ability to manage a large team of experienced mortgage staff in their day-to-day tasks. Training, monitoring and maintaining adherence to all underwriting policies and procedures are also important characteristics of this individual.
  • Manage underwriters to ensure mortgage loans are underwritten per AmeriHome and Investor underwriting guidelines
  • Ensure team members are fully trained and current on company’s philosophy and policies/procedures
  • Manage and review day-to-day tasks escalated by the underwriting team, Operation Account Representative managers, clients and exceptions team
  • Coordinate with Senior Underwriting Manager to review and respond to QA, QC or secondary post-closing/post purchase requests
  • Responsible for the training, coaching and supervision for all underwriters within the associated interpretation and application of all company overlays and agency requirements
  • Track and monitor underwriting metrics including productivity, quality, turn-times, customer service communication and all required service level agreements
  • Evaluate the structure of the Underwriting team and plan for continuous improvement in efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Provide a consistent approach to new hire training of underwriters and peer managers
  • Responsible for interviewing, hiring and onboarding of new hires
  • Develop and maintain a strong working relationship with other departments
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What you'll need:

  • 5+ years underwriting experience and 7+ in the mortgage industry
  • Working knowledge of Non-Delegated, Retail and/or Correspondent processes
  • Experience with Non- QM, FNMA/FHLMC and jumbo products
  • Experience in product and credit risk management analysis
  • 3+ years of previous management experience required
  • Project management experience
  • College degree preferred but not required
  • Current advanced knowledge of industry-specific underwriting guidelines and agency requirements
  • Proficiency with automated underwriting systems such as Desktop Underwriter and Loan Product Advisor
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to provide outstanding customer service in fast-paced environments
  • Proficient working knowledge of computerized applications such as word processing, excel spreadsheets, database, presentation software, email and specialized business applications software
  • Presentation skills necessary to effectively communicate, update, persuade and/or facilitate discussions with all levels of management as well as external clients.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, other departments and investor agencies as required
  • Prioritization and time management skills
  • Prior Encompass experience
  • Managing Guidelines/Underwriting helpdesk
  • Train clients and Underwriters
  • Prior accomplishments in process improvements
