About this role

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Oversees all operations of a feed mill producing greater than 10 tons of feed/ week OR manages two or more mills to ensure proper quantity, quality, and type of feed is trucked to farms. This role manages continuous improvement in cost, quality, service and asset utilization while remaining compliant with company policies and procedures and FSMA regulations, Federal and State guidelines, regulations and laws.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:        

  • Manage staff through subordinate leaders to ensure all phases of feed mill operations meet quantity and quality of feed needed including the pick-up and delivery of feed to growers is conducted in a timely and professional manner
  • Manage contract trucking operations and railroad grain delivery through the monitoring and efficient execution of negotiated terms and responsibilities, evaluation of service/ performance results and the partnering with trucking operations leader to ensure optimal results
  • Oversee ingredient/ raw material purchases ensuring proper quality and availability for production requirements
  • Compile and prepare relevant reports (i.e. analyzing production, feed costs, etc.) providing performance reports to senior leadership
  • Develop and administer the capital budget and expenditures while remaining compliant with Company policies and practices
  • Identify and communicate opportunities for process optimization (throughput, waste reduction, product quality, ergonomics, etc.) and/or reduce/eliminate repeat deficiencies (i.e. hold product, accidents, downtime, etc.)
  • Monitor transportation equipment performance and maintenance to ensure optimal mechanical performance; ensure preventative maintenance is completed as scheduled and documented in a timely manner
  • Ensure proper accounting and control of feed, drugs and ingredients
  • Select mentor, coach and train/ cross-train subordinate employees both directly and indirectly, encouraging career development; provide consistent feedback concerning strengths and areas in need of improvement
  • Follow and promote all safety initiatives, ensuring training is completed on time and as required, helping to maintain a zero-accident culture
  • Perform additional relevant duties as assigned

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • This role is a Leader of Leaders role with required competencies: Strategic Agility, Business Acumen, Building Effective Teams, Customer Focus and Command Skills.

EDUCATION and CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Associate’s degree in Poultry, Animal or Feed Science or other relevant field from an accredited institution, bachelors’ degree preferred
    • Combination of education and experience may be substituted for degree

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:

  • Minimum five (5) years’ progressive experience in a feed mill environment; food manufacturing experience strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated minimum two (2) years leadership experience including conflict resolution, the ability to resolve issues efficiently and effectively, knowledge of timekeeping requirements and policy adherence
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements surrounding food manufacture
  • Intermediate computer (e.g. Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, etc.) and math skills
  • Strong customer focus with the ability to communicate with internal and external customers in a timely and professional manner
  • Must have exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively communicate to all levels of the organization; multi-lingual a plus
  • Self-starter who demonstrates strong initiative and sense of urgency, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Must possess a strong customer-centric attitude, high energy level and a strong sense of urgency

SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times in areas where required
  • Read and understand Safety Data (SDS) sheets
  • Maintain updated knowledge and training/ certification on relevant safety topics
  • May be required to enter confined space

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work non-standard shifts (holiday, weekend and/or extended)
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs; occasionally required to lift overhead
  • Ability to traverse an outside environment (including inclement weather conditions) on a daily basis
  • Ability to push/pull up to 2000 lbs utilizing a pallet jack
  • Must have the ability to work in high altitudes and elevated areas
  • Constantly subject to dusty and hot environments
  • May be exposed to loud equipment with noise over 85 decibels requiring hearing protection
