Internship Overview

As a Landfill Engineer Intern, you’ll gain hands-on experience in civil, structural and environmental engineering within the context of solid waste management. You’ll work alongside experienced engineers and operations staff to support landfill design, compliance, and daily operations. This position would be based in Knoxville, TN.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with landfill design, grading plans, and cell development

  • Support environmental monitoring (e.g., groundwater, gas collection systems)

  • Help prepare engineering reports and regulatory documentation

  • Participate in site inspections and construction oversight

  • Analyze data related to landfill performance and environmental impact

  • Collaborate with operations on daily cover, leachate management, and compaction strategies

  • Contribute to sustainability initiatives and long-term closure planning

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field

  • Basic understanding of landfill systems and environmental regulations (e.g., EPA, RCRA)

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Comfortable working in outdoor and field-based environments

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities
