Position Summary...

What you'll do...

As part of the Emerging Tech team, you’ll build the backend foundation for Project Sparky, an AI powered assistant that helps customers manage everyday shopping through intelligent, context aware experiences. In this role, you’ll design and scale distributed backend systems, APIs, and data pipelines that integrate with generative and agentic AI, partnering closely with mobile, web, and AI/ML teams to power reliable, low latency conversational experiences for millions of customers.

Software Engineering – Backend team responsibilities: 
  • Design and build distributed backend systems that power customer facing products at Walmart scale.  
  • Own service architecture, data flows, and API design to support fast, reliable experiences. 
  • Balance scalability, reliability, latency, and cost as you operate systems in production.  
  • Evolve services using modern cloud, container, observability, and CI/CD practices.  
  • Troubleshoot complex production issues and drive improvements through clear postmortems.  
  • Mentor engineers and help shape long term architectural direction across services.  
  • Partner with product and platform teams to build solutions that support long term business goals. 

Who we are hiring:  
Principal Engineers 
You lead platform level architecture and guide multiple teams to deliver resilient systems at scale. 
  • 10–15+ years of backend engineering experience. (Java) 
  • Deep expertise in distributed systems, data, and cloud infrastructure. 
  • Built highly available, highly scalable services and the tooling to support them. 
  • Strong mentorship and architectural leadership across product lines. 

Staff Engineers 
You lead through technical excellence and end to end ownership. 
  • 7–10+ years of backend engineering experience. (Java) 
  • Ownership of major frontend surfaces or platform level capabilities. 
  • Strong instincts for system design and partnership with backend and cross functional teams. 
  • Experience mentoring engineers and influencing technical direction across teams.

The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
